I still can't make any sense of this, but ok, here is a diagram with random lines drawn on it. I hope the car doesn't explode every five minutes but also isn't a gutless shitbox.

After a nice winter break, the sole unmanaged team from 1985 - RAM - has been taken-over by ex-Lotus boss, novitopoli who was at the head of the queue.

Welcome back to the series, novitopoli, and we look forward to your achievements, carrying on the wonderful legacy left by andrew. For the time being, please post your electronics design ;).

...

Normally, I would hustle people a bit harder to respond, but on the 3rd of January I started a new full-time job, and so this natural delay in the series was too convenient for me to fight-against. In the past, I've generally run threads without significant delays, and I feel rather aggrieved that I've failed to do so on this occasion, however, hopefully my excuse clears-up any uncertainty.

Glad to be back! I'm really sorry for the delay, but I somehow managed not to see the "Unread Messages" window throughout the whole holiday season :badoer:

That's RAM's PCB for the 1986 season - not that I've understood how it works, but given how dreadful the car is, why not giving it a try?

Well that's our mechanical grip problem sorted, now to work on the A9's lack of downforce, excess of drag and weight, oh and the fact it understeers so much it might as well not have a steering rack

Even now I'm pretty confused, but those circuit boards do look pretty badass.

Here's hoping we can strap a jet engine on the back of our car and that we don't break down before the first round of pit stops.

300HP increase will likely be necessairy, getting a good engine will be hard this season.

Reliability is eh.... not 0%

Financial Support
As with last season, I'd like to make it clear to those that manage manufacturer-backed teams with matching works engines (Ferrari and BMW), that I will not 'bound' you to those engines. However, for those managers, failing to choose the matching works engine deal for your team will result in your manufacturer stripping you of the budget they provide you with each season, the loss of the manufacturer's name as your team name, as well as other possible (likely political) ramifications down the line.

For independent teams that build in-house engines (Alfa Romeo and Zakspeed), choosing not to use your own engine will simply result in your engine's development programme slowing or ceasing.

Teams which are supported by a manufacturer will receive financial support in the form of additional income from their parent company. These sums are non-negotiable, and are subject to change each season. I have added these to your remaining budgets at the start of the thread.

Some (or, in this case, all) parent manufacturers do not permit signing of a team (or, failing that, a supplementary) sponsor. This is due to the manufacturer competing in the sport for the purpose of advertising themselves, thus wishing to take up the prime sponsorship locations on the car, and feeling their financial contribution to the team is sufficient compensation.

For 1986, Lola’s agreement with Ford as their works engine supplier comes into effect; as per Alfa Romeo, however, this is a limited form of manufacturer support, and does not constitute financial support in any way.

'New for 1986!'™ > Included below Formula One team support are two new sections: engine programme support status (which provides information previously simulated, but not previously available), and Formula 3000 team support.

Manufacturer/Non-Manufacturer Formula 1 Team Support
Ferrari
Income for season: £20,500,000
Constraints: May not sign a team sponsor.
Note: this income has been modified by the following factor(s):
  • Positive - the team were successful in their quest for the Driver's Championship, last season.
  • Positive - the team were successful in their quest for the Constructor’s Championship, last season.

Marlboro Team McLaren
Income for season: £10,000,000
Constraints: May not sign a team sponsor.

BMW
Income for season: £16,300,000
Constraints: May not sign a team sponsor.
Note: this income has been modified by the following factor(s):
  • Positive - the team hired at least one German driver, as requested, last season.
  • Positive - the team scored a podium at a Grand Prix taking place in Germany, last season.

Osella Squadra Corse Alfa
Income for season: £2,850,000
Constraints: Must sign one-less supplementary sponsor.
Note: Alfa Romeo will be using their small portion of livery space on the car to advertise their government-backed owners - 'Finmeccanica' - rather than themselves.
Note: this income has been modified by the following factor(s):
  • Positive - the team hired at least one Italian driver, as requested, last season.
  • Negative - the team outscored the official works team in the Constructor's Championship, last season.

Manufacturer Engine Programme Support
Alfa Romeo
Engine programme status: Healthy (three R&D engine designs produced)
Note: this status has been modified by the following factor(s):
  • Positive - the team hired at least one Italian driver, as requested, last season.

Zakspeed
Engine programme status: Adequate (one R&D engine design - by contractual pre-agreement - produced)
Note: this status has been modified by the following factor(s):
  • Positive - the team hired at least one German driver, as requested, last season.

Formula 3000 Team Support
PMC Motorsport
Balance at close of fiscal year: £-270,000
Team's Championship position: 5th.
Driver's Championship position of driver one (Martin Brundle): 4th.
Driver's Championship position of driver two (Tommy Byrne): 9th.

Formula 3000 Engine, Tyre & Fuel Suppliers
Before we progress further, I'd like our glorious, sole Formula 3000 team - PMC Motorsport - to select their contractual obligations well in-advance of the Formula 1 season-start. This is necessary, so that the Williams team can enjoy the negotiation bonuses available to them, if they choose to talk to Formula 1 suppliers they already have a Formula 3000 contract with.

OK, everybody else look busy so Collieafc doesn't feel under pressure, and~... GO~!

Thank you~, PMC Motorsport! OK~, everybody, let's get started~!

Driver Signing – Set One (Of Two)
The end of 1985 has also brought to a close the careers of John Watson, Alan Jones, and Jean-Pierre Jarier. Meanwhile, Philippe Streiff now has dual citizenship, after marrying his Japanese wife, Michiko, whom he met while overseas for FUJI TV-related publicity duties.

This is the first of two sets of drivers available on the market. The second set is of identical size. You are not required to sign any drivers at this stage. You may fill none, some, or all of your driver vacancies, if you wish.

To attempt signing of a driver, simply state the driver's name. The salary or sponsorship is what it is; there is no element of negotiation to contract signing, here.

An example of signing drivers:

Code: Select all

Doggett Road Racing would like to sign the following drivers:
Maxwell Confait
Douglas Franklin
Paul Pooley

This virtual series does not feature the concept of 'team orders' (i.e. Driver 1 and Driver 2). Nonetheless, if you wish to state which cars you intend to place your drivers in, feel free to do so, like this:

Code: Select all

S.D.T. Shoe Repair Racing would like to sign the following drivers:
Car 1:
Ahmet Salih
Colin Lattimore

Car 2:
Ronnie Leighton
William 'John' Goode

Below is a categorised list of drivers active on the open-wheel scene. By far the majority of these drivers have the capability to handle a Formula One car at racing speed, but a few of the younger and/or less experienced drivers may struggle.

'New for 1986!'™ > Due to the inclusion of a Formula 3000 team at the start of this season, additional categories of younger and less-experienced drivers have been made available; drivers without an offer from a Formula 1 team will always take a seat in Formula 3000, but when a Formula 1 and Formula 3000 team compete over a driver, the Formula 3000 team's offer will suffer a penalty.

Pay drivers are indicated by red font, and brackets surrounding their salaries.

You are not permitted to approach any drivers not listed below, in this first phase, as those drivers will appear in the second phase of driver signing!

A quick overview of the number of seats each team needs to fill:

Ferrari
… has three seats to fill.

Williams
Arrows
Brabham
Minardi
Tyrrell
BMW
Lotus
Marlboro Team McLaren
Toleman
Osella Squadra Corse Alfa
Alfa Romeo
Ligier
Zakspeed
PMC Motorsport
... all have two seats to fill.

RAM
Lola
Spirit
AGS

… all have one seat to fill.

Marlboro Team McLaren - as the sole non-manufacturer team with financial support, Marlboro - who act as your team sponsor - have requested a preference for at least one racing driver from the United States. It's just a preference, though.

When I receive a wishlist of drivers to sign - or a statement indicating they do not wish to sign any drivers at this stage - from every team, I will post the results. Have fun!

The Collapse of Lotus
Just a year after an earlier crisis, the Lotus Formula One team have placed themselves in severe financial difficulty - this time - from which it appears they cannot recover:

BioBiro wrote:Teams may go into debt. Your lending limit is your starting budget. Any team that is in-debt to more than the amount of their budget at the start of the season (a starting budget of £7,500,000 means you may borrow as much as -£7,500,000) will be declared bankrupt and immediately disqualified from the series. Finishing the season (defined as: after the winter off-season D&T period) with a negative balance will result in immediate bankruptcy.

Lotus enjoyed financial stability throughout 1984, which was reflected on the track with a total of ten podium-finishes, and one Grand Prix victory.

The team crashed to earth in 1985, however, ending the season with only ten points. Aggressive management left them with less than a thousand pounds in their checking account, and virtually no available balance to borrow-on.

National Westminster Bank stated to a gathering of British press, "Team Lotus have demonstrated a pattern of reckless over-spending throughout the last two years. We appreciate that there have been changes in management and periods of mixed success for the company, but we are not prepared to bail them-out a second time, and are handing over their mortgaged assets to repay creditors."

The Grand Prix circus will surely not be the same without the glorius black-and-gold cars, that carry such motoring history and engineering brilliance.

I'd like to thank thor97 for his efforts, and wish him well for the future :).

Glad to see Tassin and Nielsen join the series. Two drivers who never made it to F1 in real life more or less because of serious injuries but who had very good GT/endurance careers. I really hope they do well in the universe!

@BioBiro
Has Nielsen paid us yet? I see Zakspeed have lost 80,000 from our bank account but haven't received John's money...

So, Lotus is dead again? Even RAM are still afloat :P

Anyway, with Brundle not signing, I'm going for my Plan B in terms of drivers- try and retain both Rosberg and Nannini, and keep the same lineup for the third season in a row.
