Highest Position Championship - Fangio & Senna Cup

Post by Zenarcher »

This championship is pretty simple whatever the highest position a driver achieved during the race will count as their final race result so that makes it possible for more than one person to win a race it will also mean no driver can retire from a race and will always finish somewhere and yes even if someone leads for just 1 lap it will count as a win for them.

I decided to skip them out since they didn't really make much of an impact on the championship standings plus most drivers competing for the championship didn't appear to take part in it anyway. I also saw some other championships on here skipped them so thought it must be a common thing to do.

1957 Season - Points Used 8-6-4-3-2

Fangio continues to break the record for the most driver titles as he secured his 6th title. It was another close battle between Fangio and Moss with Behra and Collins also getting involved this time.

Top 10

1. Juan Manuel Fangio - Points 51 - Wins 6

There are some alternative championships where it makes a difference, especially my anti-clockwise championship where it made up the majority of anti-clockwise races of the 1950s. And in my car numbers championship, it turns out an Indy 500 podium scorer wins a championship! But here, yes, none would rank in the top three, likely as not.

Yes I've just gone over the results quickly I see a few of the winners would have just made it into the top 10 but none would have managed the top 3 as for this championship you really need to be competing in every single race to stand a chance of winning the championship.

A quick look at driver statistics

Before we move onto the 1958 season results I will go over our two champions so far since both of their careers have come to an end,

Alberto Ascari

Races 31
Wins 22
Podiums 28
Pole positions 14
Fastest laps 12
Championships 2

It's a real shame Ascari was killed in an accident as his stats show he was an amazing driver and the only person to beat Fangio while he was still racing.

Juan Manuel Fangio

Races 51
Wins 44
Podiums 50
Pole positions 29
Fastest laps 23
Championships 6

His stats are incredible he was in 1st place at some point during 44 of his 51 races and managed to be in the top 3 in all but one race I think that alone shows why many regard him as the best of all time.

1958 Season - Points Used 8-6-4-3-2

Moss and Hawthorn had an amazing close championship all season and in the end, Moss just managed to win by 2 points. This season also saw the first woman to race in Formula One Maria Teresa de Filippis who actually in this championship managed to score 2 points for reaching 5th place during the Italian Grand Prix. 1958 also marks the first year that the constructor's championship was introduced which I've also included below.

Top 10

1. Stirling Moss - Points 74 - Wins 8
2. Mike Hawthorn - Points 72 - Wins 8
3. Tony Brooks - Points 50 - Wins 4
4. Jean Behra - Points 46 - Wins 2
5. Peter Collins - Points 36 - Wins 3
6. Harry Schell - Points 30
7. Stuart Lewis-Evans - Points 27 - Wins 1
8. Luigi Musso - Points 24
9. Roy Salvadori - Points 21
10. Wolfgang von Trips - Points 16

Constructors

Ferrari wins the first-ever constructor's championship closely followed by Vanwall in 2nd place just 4 points behind.

Wow, Maria Teresa de Filippis beats Graham Hill! Now looking forward to see how well Lella Lombardi does in the mid-1970s.

I think I counted correctly and saw that in about 30 races, Fangio won 28 of them, with one of the other results being 2nd :D

Honestly, thank goodness the 50s had unreliability! They would be even worse than today's results if this is how the scoring was done :P

Something like the Senna-Prost years will be very interesting, as both drivers seem to lead every race almost. It's actually quite fun how some championships are decided by a couple of points, and seem to stay that way throughout most of their length.

Last years champion, Moss was defending his title against Brabham in another close championship with just 2 points between them, in the end, Jack Brabham was crowned the 1959 champion. 1. Jack Brabham - Points 54 - Wins 4
2. Stirling Moss - Points 52 - Wins 5
3. Tony Brooks - Points 36 - Wins 2

1963 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

Jim Clark won his second championship this time more comfortably ahead of second-place he managed to win all but one race. Further down the grid, it was rather competitive with many other drivers getting onto the podium, in fact, most in the top 8 managed it regularly.

1966 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

This year started off interesting with the 4-time champion Jim Clark suffering some bad luck in the early stages his engine got flooded with water in Belgium with heavy rain he also got hit in the eye during practise by a bird in France and didn't start the race. There weren't any real favourites, to begin with, but it quickly became clear that Jack Brabham would take his third championship after winning every race from France to Mexico.

Top 10

1. Jack Brabham - Points 70 - Wins 7
2. John Surtees - Points 60 - Wins 4
3. Jim Clark - Points 50 - Wins 4

1967 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

1967 was easily the closest championship so far with Jack Brabham looking the favourite at times along with Graham Hill and Denny Hulme but Jim Clark after a poorer start to the season compared to the rest of them managed to go on and win 9 races in a row there were 3 races when Jim Clark and Jack Brabham were tied on points until Jack Brabham finished 4th in America which that alone handed Jim Clark his 5th drivers title he's now just 1 away from matching Fangio.

Top 10

1. Jim Clark - Points 88 - Wins 9
2. Jack Brabham - Points 79 - Wins 6
3. Graham Hill - Points 70 - Wins 6

1968 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

1968 saw another close championship this time we saw three drivers closely battle their way through the season with just a few points between them also everyone in the top 10 won at least 2 races. Jackie Stewart at one point was gaining fast on Graham Hill despite missing 2 rounds earlier in the season. Graham Hill won his first drivers title just 6 points ahead of Jackie Stewart.

Unfortunately, 1968 also saw the death of our 5-time champion Jim Clark he had an incredible career that has now sadly been cut short so I've gathered up his stats below,

Jim Clark

Jochen Rindt

Races 60
Wins 15
Podiums 29

Top 10

1. Jackie Stewart - Points 91 - Wins 9
2. Jacky Ickx - Points 61 - Wins 2
3. Clay Regazzoni - Points 56 - Wins 3

For me, that makes Peter Gethin's Italian GP win all the more remarkable. Not only did he not finish in the points at any other race that season, but he didn't even run in the points at any point. That'd be like George Russell winning at Interlagos this year.

When you say it like that it does make it an incredible win! 1972 see's him get two-point finishes with 6th in Italy this time.

1972 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

Both Emerson Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart had a close championship battle all season but Jackie Stewart missed the Belgian Grand Prix due to a health issue called gastritis. He also suffered from glandular fever in 1971 which makes it even more impressive he won the championship that year. As for 1972, Emerson Fittipaldi wins the drivers championship just 6 points ahead of Jackie Stewart.

1970 saw Jack Brabham retire at the end of the season here are his career stats below,

Jack Brabham

Races 126
Wins 32
Podiums 66
Pole positions 13
Fastest laps 12
Championships 3

A very impressive career winning 3 driver titles and so far in this championship has more podium finishes than any other driver.

Top 10

1. Emerson Fittipaldi - Points 89 - Wins 7
2. Jackie Stewart - Points 83 - Wins 7
3. Jacky Ickx - Points 63 - Wins 4
4. Denny Hulme - Points 58 - Wins 2
5. Clay Regazzoni - Points 54 - Wins 2
6. Peter Revson - Points 36 - Wins 1
7. Chris Amon - Points 32 - Wins 1
8. François Cevert - Points 29
9. Ronnie Peterson - Points 25
10. Mike Hailwood - Points 22

Image

Constructors,

For the first time yet we have a tie in the constructors championship both Tyrrell-Ford and Lotus-Ford have 89 points each. I checked the rules on what would happen,

If two or more constructors or drivers finish the season with the same number of points, the higher place in the Championship (in either case) shall be awarded to :

a) The holder of the greatest number of first places.

b) If the number of first places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of second places.

c) If the number of second places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so on until a winner emerges.

d) If this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit.

So putting this rule to use Tyrrell-Ford have been awarded this years constructors championship. I went back to check all the other drivers to add up the results,

Tyrrell-Ford - Wins = 7 2nd = 5 3rd = 3 4th = 2 5th = 3 6th = 1
Lotus-Ford - Wins = 7 2nd = 3 3rd = 2 4th = 0 5th = 0 6th = 0

1973 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

1973 saw a very close gap between the contenders for the championship. Emerson Fittipaldi was leading up to Sweden from there Ronnie Peterson took over the lead but up to Austria Jackie Stewart was just 4 points behind. Ronnie Peterson went onto win this year's championship after winning 12 races. Jackie Stewart would withdraw from the final race due to the unfortunate death of his teammate François Cevert in an accident during qualifying however this didn't cost him the championship as Ronnie Peterson had already secured it anyway. François Cevert career stats can be found below. The most interesting race this season was in Canada with the safety car making its first appearance and 7 people won the race.

François Cevert

Races 46
Wins 5
Podiums 18
Pole positions 0
Fastest laps 2
Championships 0

Top 10

1. Ronnie Peterson - Points 121 - Wins 12
2. Jackie Stewart - Points 102 - Wins 7
3. Emerson Fittipaldi - Points 95 - Wins 6
4. François Cevert - Points 68 - Wins 3
5. Denny Hulme - Points 64 - Wins 2
6. Peter Revson - Points 51 - Wins 2
7. Carlos Reutemann - Points 38
8. Jody Scheckter - Points 27 - Wins 2
9. Niki Lauda - Points 27 - Wins 1
10. Carlos Pace - Points 26

Lotus-Ford won their 5th constructors championship the teams first since 1965 making them currently the most successful team.

1974 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

The early part of the season saw Carlos Reutemann, Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson, Clay Regazzoni and Niki Lauda all being favourites for the championship but once we got to the midway point it was clear this year's drivers championship was going to Niki Lauda then he went on to win 7 races in a row he created a big gap in the points to second place Clay Regazzoni who was a whole 28 points behind.

Driver career highlights time today its both Jackie Stewart and John Surtees I'm trying to highlight more every day now of drivers who have retired,

John Surtees

Races 111
Wins 18
Podiums 54
Pole positions 8
Fastest laps 11
Championships 0

Unfortunately for Surtees he never won any of the highest position championships but he did remain competitive to the end of his career as most seasons he raced in he would occasionally lap in the top 3 at some point scoring podiums.

Jackie Stewart

Races 99
Wins 53
Podiums 81
Pole positions 17
Fastest laps 15
Championships 2

Jackie Stewart stats are pretty incredible he is one of the few drivers so far to have won every single race in a season and out of his 99 starts in F1 he was in the top 3 in 81 races and was in the lead 53 times.

Top 10

1. Niki Lauda - Points 113 - Wins 10
2. Clay Regazzoni - Points 85 - Wins 4
3. Ronnie Peterson - Points 82 - Wins 6
4. Emerson Fittipaldi - Points 73 - Wins 3
5. Carlos Reutemann - Points 66 - Wins 5
6. Jody Scheckter - Points 61 - Wins 2
7. Patrick Depailler - Points 31 - Wins 1
8. Jacky Ickx - Points 28 - Wins 1
9. Carlos Pace - Points 28
10. James Hunt - Points 27

Ferrari wins and it's their 4th constructor's title as well.

1975 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

Carlos Pace was leading the championship to begin with right up to Sweden about midway through the season until last years champion Niki Lauda caught up and then comfortably won his second drivers title a whole 32 points ahead of Carlos Pace in second place. Further down the grid, it was highly competitive with many other drivers winning races and making it to the podium both the Spanish and British Grand Prix's had 7 winners.

Lella Lombardi raced this season the first female driver since Maria Teresa de Filippis in the late 1950s who managed to do a few laps in 5th place during the Italian Grand Prix earning her 2 points. Lella Lombardi scored 1 point in her 10 races this season her other best results were 7th in Germany and 9th in Italy.

Today's driver's highlight is Denny Hulme who recently retired in 1974 so here are his career stats below,

Denny Hulme

Races 112
Wins 17
Podiums 58
Pole positions 1
Fastest laps 9
Championships 0

Hulme was always consistently finishing the season in the top 10 and regularly managed to lap in the top 3 throughout his career.

Top 10

1. Niki Lauda - Points 104 - Wins 10
2. Carlos Pace - Points 72 - Wins 5
3. James Hunt - Points 67 - Wins 5
4. Clay Regazzoni - Points 65 - Wins 3
5. Carlos Reutemann - Points 60 - Wins 4
6. Emerson Fittipaldi - Points 60 - Wins 2
7. Jody Scheckter - Points 50 - Wins 2
8. Jean-Pierre Jarier - Points 46 - Wins 2
9. Jochen Mass - Points 40 - Wins 1
10. Vittorio Brambilla - Points 36 - Wins 3

Constructors

Ferrari wins again and ties with Lotus for 5 constructor championships.

Really looking forward to the early turbo years - can see some left-field champions given some cars were always qualifying well but very unreliable (I'm thinking people like Arnoux, Jabouille, Laffite etc).

It's interesting seeing how things could've played out if reliability was better back then so far I've lost count how many times I've seen a driver doing well in a race then the car breaks down at least in this championship it's fairer on them for when that happens.

dr-baker wrote:Lella Lombardi did better than Graham Hill, Chris Amon and Jean-Pierre Jabouille!

She did rather well and came close a few more times to a point finish and in 1976 her best 2 finishes were 12th and 14th.

1976 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

Onto a very interesting season now so good it's got its own movie. Niki Lauda started off strong and was leading the championship with a 23 point lead after his bad accident in Germany. James Hunt closed the gap down to 14 points in Austria then down to 5 points after the Dutch Grand Prix. Niki Lauda made his return in Italy and managed to extend his lead by 8 points but after this James Hunt went onto win the final 3 races which saw him eventually take over the lead of the championship in the USA and then winning the drivers title in Japan 9 points ahead of Niki Lauda. It was such an amazing comeback from Niki Lauda it took James Hunt 5 whole races just to catch up and take the lead of the championship while Niki Lauda was still within reach of winning it as well.

Driver highlight this time is Graham hill who in this championship managed to win one driver's title a look at his stats below,

Graham Hill

Races 176
Wins 35
Podiums 71
Pole positions 13
Fastest laps 10
Championships 1

Top 10

1. James Hunt - Points 102 - Wins 10
2. Niki Lauda - Points 93 - Wins 7
3. Jody Scheckter - Points 78 - Wins 4
4. Clay Regazzoni - Points 66 - Wins 2
5. Patrick Depailler - Points 66 - Wins 1
6. Ronnie Peterson - Points 57 - Wins 4
7. Mario Andretti - Points 38 - Wins 2
8. John Watson - Points 34 - Wins 1
9. Vittorio Brambilla - Points 34
10. Jacques Laffite - Points 33 - Wins 1

It's a tie between McLaren-Ford and Ferrari but McLaren-Ford takes this year's constructors championship for winning 10 races while Ferrari managed only 8 in comparison.

1977 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

Another close season and interestingly Niki Lauda never once was leading the championship it was either James Hunt, Mario Andretti or Jody Scheckter taking turns. James Hunt secured his second driver's title just 1 point ahead of Mario Andretti.

Today's driver highlights go to Carlos Pace and Tom Pryce who both tragically died in 1977 their career stats are below,

Carlos Pace

Races 69
Wins 7
Podiums 21
Pole positions 1
Fastest laps 5
Championships 0

Tom Pryce

Races 41

Mario Andretti won his first drivers title and was comfortably ahead in the points all season, in the end, he was 32 points clear of Niki Lauda in second place. At the Italian Grand Prix, Ronnie Peterson was killed in an accident. He managed to win the 1973 drivers championship and he is today's driver highlight,

1979 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

1979 gave us yet another close season this time the championship was between a few drivers and Patrick Depailler was actually leading the championship up until France before breaking both of his legs in a hang-gliding incident which meant he wouldn't race for the rest of the year. It then was a close call between Gilles Villeneuve, Jody Scheckter, Jacques Laffite and Alan Jones, in fact, Alan Jones had the strongest second half of the season winning 6 of the final 8 races. This year's drivers championship goes to Gilles Villeneuve finishing 11 points ahead of Jody Scheckter.

Today's driver's highlight goes to James Hunt our 1976 and 1977 champion he had a rather short career in comparison to some other champions featured on here but in the few seasons he raced he won 2 championships the rest of his stats are below,

James Hunt

Races 92
Wins 27
Podiums 42
Pole positions 14
Fastest laps 8
Championships 2

Top 10

1. Gilles Villeneuve - Points 91 - Wins 7
2. Jody Scheckter - Points 80 - Wins 4
3. Alan Jones - Points 79 - Wins 7
4. Jacques Laffite - Points 60 - Wins 4
5. Jean-Pierre Jabouille - Points 57 - Wins 4
6. Clay Regazzoni - Points 52 - Wins 1
7. René Arnoux - Points 46 - Wins 2
8. Patrick Depailler - Points 45 - Wins 3
9. Carlos Reutemann - Points 37
10. Nelson Piquet - Points 33

1979 was the first year in which more than one car from each constructor could score points. This year's winner goes to Ferrari their 6th title matching Lotus's 6 titles record.

Before we get onto the 1980 season I've put this comparison together of all our highest position champions so far I've excluded the ones who are still racing but they will be added when their careers have finished I'll probably do this again when we get to the 1999 season.

Image

1980 Season - Points Used 9–6–4–3–2–1

Alan Jones wins this year's championship he won 9 of the 14 races and was the only driver to manage a podium at every race something only a few of our champions have managed to achieve that and it was last done by Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972.

Today's driver highlight is Jacky Ickx our 1970 champion,

Jacky Ickx

Races 114
Wins 22
Podiums 53
Pole positions 13
Fastest laps 14
Championships 1

Top 10

1. Alan Jones - Points 107 - Wins 9
2. Jacques Laffite - Points 75 - Wins 5
3. Nelson Piquet - Points 75 - Wins 4
4. Didier Pironi - Points 69 - Wins 4
5. René Arnoux - Points 65 - Wins 5
6. Carlos Reutemann - Points 58 - Wins 1
7. Jean-Pierre Jabouille - Points 54 - Wins 5
8. Gilles Villeneuve - Points 33 - Wins 1
9. Bruno Giacomelli - Points 29 - Wins 1
10. Elio de Angelis - Points 19

Image

Constructors

Williams-Ford won their first-ever constructors championship. You'll notice some big difference here between the real actual results compared to this championship, for example, Ferrari finished 10th with 8 points but here they're 5th with 41 points the same with Renault here 3rd with 119 points but in the real-life results were actually 4th with just 38 points.
