Lowest Position Championship

Post by Zenarcher »

Like the highest position championship which awarded points for whatever the highest position a driver achieved during the race even where they started on the first lap. The lowest position championship is the complete opposite of that so for example if a driver is leading for most of the race but falls back to 4th because they did an early pit stop and then went onto win the race their final result would be 4th.

I've also decided not to count the first lap if a driver failed to complete it the will go down as retirement instead they must complete at least one full lap to be counted, this is much tougher compared to the highest position championship where all you needed to really do was get pole position and start the race on pole to be given the maximum points.

I won't be doing any big spreadsheets for this championship since it takes too long to make so I'll do each decade at a time to go through things much quicker,

So in this universe the motivation for a driver would be, the absolute moment their car would start breaking down, STOP the car immediately and jump out of it so that you don't lose any points!

I think it would be interesting in a fantasy forum, where the moment a driver starts having issues, you counted it as a retirement. So the concept of having the lowest points awarded put into action. No dodgy 0 point races where they spent a couple of laps trundling around at the back. We would lose so many fantastic drives like when Schumacher was stuck in 5th gear, or really any race where a driver qualified poorly and made their way up the grid. As you say, at that point the only real motivation is just to ruin other people's races.

I'd be interested in races like in 2012, where Hamilton had to start last in Spain, and Vettel started last in Abu Dhabi. They'd have to overtake like 14 or 15 people in the first lap to have a chance of getting a point

It's also worth of note that most circuits have finish line before the pit lane so if driver goes to retire in the pits, the last lap will count. For example in 2005 San Marino Grand Prix Räikkönen led first eight laps and then completed ninth lap in 18th place as he entered the pits and retired. Funnily enough Imola changed its finish line to be before the pits in 1998, until that it had been after pit lane.

1982 is really different, isn't it, particularly for Rosberg and Arnoux!

Yeah, it turned out completely different for them it seems it's because Arnoux tended to start higher up on the grid and sometimes started on pole position but Rosberg usually started further back and would work his way up through the field during the race.

Schumacher and Hill had a very close season with not much between the two for the majority of the time, Schumacher led the championship until the last race when Hill just managed to draw on the points and because he has one more win it meant Damon Hill won the championship. It's worth mentioning Coulthard came close to winning as well.

2010 - Points Used 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

Nico Rosberg was actually third for a good part of the season in the first half it was surprising to see how long it took for Hamilton, Alonso, and Button to overtake him.

1. Sebastian Vettel 238
2. Mark Webber 184
3. Lewis Hamilton 148
4. Fernando Alonso 146
5. Jenson Button 99
6. Nico Rosberg 77

13. Vitaly Petrov 5
14. Vitantonio Liuzzi 1

2011 - Points Used 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

Interesting to see Vettel scoring slightly fewer points in 2011 compared to 2010 although the gap to second place this time is much larger. Further down saw Alonso and Hamilton battle for 2nd place all season and Button who was further back down at one point behind Webber and Massa saw in the final 6 races a huge leap in the points which placed him in 4th place.

1. Sebastian Vettel 225
2. Fernando Alonso 127
3. Lewis Hamilton 119
4. Jenson Button 110
5. Mark Webber 95
6. Felipe Massa 43
7. Nico Rosberg 14
8. Michael Schumacher 13
9. Vitaly Petrov 11
10. Adrian Sutil 6
11. Nick Heidfeld 4
12. Robert Kubica 1
13. Sergio Pérez 1
14. Paul di Resta 1

2012 - Points Used 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

After the first three races, Michael Schumacher had a 10 point lead in the championship.

Nine races in saw Vettel leading the championship followed by Alonso, Hamilton, and Grosjean.

After 15 races Vettel still led the championship followed by Hamilton, Button, and Alonso.

The final 7 races saw both Red Bull drivers gain a large number of points this put Vettel further ahead in the championship in fact he had it wrapped up in the second last race. Hamilton, Button and Alonso switched around 2nd and 3rd places with only really Hamilton in the very end being able to give Vettel a challenge for the title. You'll notice that Raikkonen finished further down than probably expected out of the 18 races Grosjean was ahead of him in points its mainly because Raikkonen would start further back and work his way up through the field gaining positions so in this championship it didn't work well for him.

1. Sebastian Vettel 186
2. Lewis Hamilton 153
3. Jenson Button 114
4. Fernando Alonso 113
5. Mark Webber 76
6. Kimi Räikkönen 56

12. Nico Hülkenberg 14
13. Kamui Kobayashi 6

15. Bruno Senna 1
16. Paul di Resta 1

2013 - Points Used 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

Alonso led the championship to begin with before Vettel took over but for a short time and Rosberg wasn't too far off leading the championship and then Vettel began to dominate the second half of the season with many of these races being led from start to finish so he scored 25 points often in fact even if Vettel finished with 250 points in real life he would have still won the championship by 8 points.

1. Sebastian Vettel 250
2. Fernando Alonso 105
3. Nico Rosberg 80
4. Mark Webber 72
5. Lewis Hamilton 61
6. Romain Grosjean 61
7. Felipe Massa 24
8. Kimi Räikkönen 19
9. Nico Hülkenberg 16
10. Jenson Button 13
11. Adrian Sutil 9
12. Jean-Éric Vergne 8
13. Sergio Pérez 5
14. Paul di Resta 2
15. Valtteri Bottas 1

2014 - Points Used 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

9 races in saw Hamilton lead but just by 1 point ahead of Rosberg. After 13 races Rosberg was ahead with 189 points and Hamilton 159. In the closes stages of the season, Rosberg lost a lot of points to Hamilton with some technical issues with his car like in Singapore and Abu Dhabi. He was still within reach of winning the title in the final race though.

1. Lewis Hamilton 263
2. Nico Rosberg 226
3. Valtteri Bottas 66
4. Fernando Alonso 59
5. Sebastian Vettel 53
6. Daniel Ricciardo 49
7. Felipe Massa 43
8. Kevin Magnussen 27
9. Jenson Button 19
10. Nico Hülkenberg 15
11. Kimi Räikkönen 5
12. Sergio Pérez 2
13. Jean-Éric Vergne 1
14. Daniil Kvyat 1

2015 - Points Used 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

Vettel had a really strong and consistent season he was always just around 15 to 25 points behind Hamilton and Rosberg and in the early part of the season was actually in second for a time.

1. Lewis Hamilton 266
2. Nico Rosberg 228
3. Sebastian Vettel 183
4. Kimi Räikkönen 104
5. Valtteri Bottas 74

After Singapore Bottas was leading the championship with 160 points while Hamilton and Vettel tied in second with 154 points each. However, Hamilton would go onto win in the end and I was surprised how well Bottas did despite it being a season a few would consider being his worst. A reason why Hamilton scored lower here is he would often stop and drop to about 5th then would later win the race but in this championship scores only 10 points instead of 25.

1. Lewis Hamilton 227
2. Valtteri Bottas 216
3. Sebastian Vettel 188
