Winless Drivers Alternative Championship

Post by takagi_for_the_win »

How does this Championship work?

At the start of each season, only drivers who are yet to win a Championship race are eligible for the season ahead.
Once a driver wins a Championship race outright, they remain eligible for this alternate Championship until the end of the season.
Points systems are the same between the official Championship and this one (bar the fastest lap points from the 50's, my cursory googling couldn't find them)

1952 - Image Piero Taruffi
1953 - Image Mike Hawthorn
1954 - Image Maurice Trintignant
1955 - Image Stirling Moss

It was a nice introduction for the Winless Drivers championship, as the title fight between Ferrari stablemates Alberto Ascari and Jose Froilan Gonzalez went down to the wire in Spain. Ultimately though, despite Gonzalez's victory, Ascari's second place was enough to see him take the inaugural crown by two points. Luigi Villoresi's consistency helped him to third in the standings ahead of Taruffi and Bonetto. A special shoutout has to go to Luigi Fagioli, who only entered one race, gave his car up midrace to Fangio who wound up winning, thus ruling Fagioli out of this Championship from 1952 onwards.

Drivers who won races outright in 1951, and are therefore ineligible going forward, are:
Lee Wallard (1 win)
Luigi Fagioli (1 win)
Jose Froilan Gonzalez (2 wins)
Alberto Ascari (3 wins, 1951 Champion)

Ultimately 1952 was a cakewalk for Piero Taruffi, who won the season opening Swiss Grand Prix outright and then, to stamp his mark on his final season being eligible for this championship, won two of the next three races he entered; in a season where only 4 results counted, this was good enough for the Ferrari driver to lay one hand on the title. Ultimately his three best results would've been enough to take the title at a canter, as neither Robert Manzon nor Mike Hawthorn could get close to the Italian. Big up Manzon for taking a win for Gordini though!

Drivers who won races outright in 1952, and therefore are ineligible going forward, are:
Piero Taruffi (4 wins, 1952 Champion)
Lee Wallard (1 win)

Having finished runner up in 3 races in 1952, and twice more in the opening 3 rounds of 1953, Mike Hawthorn could have been forgiven for thinking the stars were just never going to align for him. However, in the French Grand Prix, he broke his duck in the most spectacular fashion - not only did he win his first Winless Driver's Championship event, he also won the event outright, ending Alberto Ascari's incredible run of 9 outright wins in a row in the process. From there, the Brit took the class win in the next three events, giving him the maximum possible score of 4 wins for his 4 best finishes. Luigi Villoresi ran the Briton hard, picking up three class wins in the process, but ultimately Hawthorn had the edge this time around. For the third season in a row, Ferrari swept pretty much all before them, with only the Indy 500 and Felice Bonetto's shared class win in a Maserati denying the men from Maranello all 9 wins.

Drivers who won races outright in 1952, and therefore are ineligible going forward, are:
Bill Vukovich (1 class win)
Mike Hawthorn (4 class wins, 1953 Champion)

With Luigi Villoresi, narrow runner-up in 1953, having to miss the start of the season with a serious injury that ultimately impacted his pace, the race for the 1954 championship appeared more wide open than ever. However, Maurice Trintignant had other ideas. Taking class wins in the first two races he entered and making it to the podium every time he finished the race saw him win the championship well clear of Karl Kling. Between Kling and Hans Herrmann, Mercedes picked up class wins in their first season in the formula, with Jimmy Bryan, Onofré Marimon, Luigi Musso, and Umberto Maglioli all picking up class wins (although Magioli's was a shared drive.)

Drivers who won races outright in 1954, and therefore are ineligible going forward, are:
No new winners in 1954

1955 Winless Drivers Alternate Championship

Having won the 1954 Championship, Maurice Trintignant decided the best way to start his title defence would be to take first and second in class at the season opening Argentine Grand Prix. He then followed this up with an outright win next time out at Monaco, but from there his season slid downhill, and he failed to pick up another podium. Stepping up to take the limelight was Mercedes driver Stirling Moss who promptly scooped up three class wins in a row, the last of which was also his maiden outright win. This was enough to secure the title for Moss, while Castelotti's class win on home turf at Monza helped him leapfrog Trintignant for the runners-up spot.

Drivers who won races outright in 1955, and therefore are ineligible going forward, are:
Maurice Trintignant (5 class wins, 1954 Champion)
Bob Sweikert (1 class win)
Stirling Moss (3 class wins, 1955 Champion)
