CHASSIS DEVELOPMENT

Like mentioned in the first post, each season consists of three R&D periods during the season on which the teams can develop their chassis. A single period is 3-5 races long after which potential upgrades are installed to the chassis.

Before each R&D period the teams have to commit to developing their chassis by choosing their level of investment. Higher levels increase the chance for greater performance gain.
The levels and their prices are:
Low - 250 cr
Moderate - 500 cr
High - 750 cr
All-in - 1000 cr

There is no specific areas you can develop individually. Rather, all development will be general and you only have to announce the level of R&D you are planning to do.

At the end of each R&D period the potential upgrades will be installed to your cars. I will announce on a scale of 0-5 how successful your upgrades were at the end of the period.

You are free to post a R&D schedule for the whole season already if you so wish.

TIP! When budgeting, it's a good idea to leave some money for the New Chassis R&D Period that happens towards the end of the season.

HOW TO R&D
Example:

Moderate R&D (500 cr) for KOIRANEN BROS.

---

PLEASE POST YOUR PLANS FOR 1st R&D PERIOD NOW
These upgrades will be installed to your cars for round 4 of the championship (San Marino).

The deadline for investments is on 28th of April.[/quote]

Also, Hermann95, I need you to announce which one of your drivers will drive the #13 car and take part in pre-qualifying.

If allowed i'd like to put Johansson into the #13 car until he fails to Pre-qualify for the first time. After his first DNPQ i'd like to swap him into the #14 car for the rest of the season.

And for R&D plans:
Moderate - 500 cr

On a similar note of no consequence other than it being iconic Laffite needs the #26, not the #25

I changed them around in the wiki. You and everyone else is free to edit the numbers in the wiki as they wish since the numbers don't make any difference. The Ensign #13 is the exception here because I need some way to keep track of which of their cars takes part in pre-qualifying.

1982 ROUND 1 - KYALAMI

It's go time! The weather is sunny and all 32 drivers are raring to go on the eve of a new season. Six of them will take part in pre-qualifying: the bottom three teams of 1981 Osella, ATS and Toleman and Ensign's new entry, driven by Stefan Johansson.

Image
Nice variety of cars that advance from pre-Q. Corrado Fabi has some work to do to figure the ins and outs of F1 racing.

Image
Patrick Tambay takes the pole in a qualifying session dominated by turbo-powered cars. Theodore's Jean-Pierre Jarier makes a huge impression with his 9th place.

Image

Kyalami Notes
- Prost gets a flying start to the season with a convincing victory
- It's turbo dominance with the rest of the field lapped twice
- Overall pretty uneventful race with no major surprises

1982 ROUND 2 - JACAREPAGUÁ

The Jacarepaguá circuit is much more technical compared to Kyalami so the turbo advantage should be a lot smaller here. Weather is dry for the weekend, bar for the pre-qualifying session that sees moderate rain.

Image
Osella find the perfect setup for the rainy conditions and never looked to be in danger.

Image
Renault lock the front row as Prost takes the pole position.

Image

Jacarepaguá Notes
- Prost caps off his perfect weekend with a dominant win, lapping the whole field
- Surer completes the Renault 1-2, albeit a lap down to his team-mate
- Ligiers make a great comeback from 10th and 22th in the grid to score double points

1982 ROUND 3 - LONG BEACH

We're back in sunny Florida. It's a tight street circuit that offers a yet another different challenge to the first two tracks we've visited so far.

Image
Teo Fabi continues his pre-qualifying dominance. Rumours in the paddock suggest that following Johansson's failure to qualify, Guerra will take his seat in the following pre-q sessions.

Image
Renault lock the front row once again but this time it's Surer who is in front. Lotus have a strong session in 5th and 7th while the reigning World champion Alan Jones continues his woes in 15th.

Image

Long Beach Notes
- Lotus score a shock 1-2 finish in a race that saw many front-runners run into problems
- Patrick Tambay looks to be Alain Prost's main championship rival with his second podium finish of the season.

I just wanted to ask if Ensigns R&D was run correctly because you stated an investment of 250cr but we invested 500cr. In the spreasheet amount of money for R&D is correct.

Either way Ensign will spend another 500cr on R&D.

Looks like Theodore have a bit of a fragile speedster on our hands. If we can finish without an incident...

However we will continue without developments to ensure we have a chance of fufilling the financial rules for next season

1982 ROUND 4 - IMOLA
Alain Prost leads the championship after winning the first two races of the season. Some teams, most notably Brabham and Lotus, havew brought updates to Italy. Driverwise the only change is seen at Ensign where Guerra and Johansson swap seats so that Guerra will from now on take part in pre-qualifying.

Weather is dry.

Image
Fabi brothers dominate and Guerra makes it through. Ghinzani DNPQ's for the first time this season.

Image
Renault and Prost in particular are on pace again. Surer, McLarens, Ferraris and Williams look to be battling it out for P2.

Image
Imola Notes
- Prost and Renault look unstoppable
- Williams finally recover from their poor start to the season
- Brabham and Lotus unable to make the big upgrades pay

1982 ROUND 5 - ZOLDER
Weather is dry.

Image
Pre-q king Derek Daly fails to qualify in spectacular fashion. Ghinzani the other driver sent packing early.

Image
Renault lock the front row as usual. Ferrari pair in row two show improved pace and might have a shot to challenge for the win.

Image
Zolder Notes
- Surer takes his first win of the season and climbs up to second in points, five behind team-mate Prost
- Low attrition at the top means there are no huge shocks in the points
- Alan Jones' woes continue as the reigning champ finishes three laps down to the leaders

1982 ROUND 6 - MONACO
We're back to the tight street circuit. Weather is dry but we might be in for surprises regardless.

Image
The big story in pre-qualifying is that both Tolemans make it through fro the first time since Italy last season.

Image
Prost on pole, again. Jarier and Teo Fabi impress while Villeneuve leaves himself a massive mountain to climb after qualifying only in 22nd.

Image
Monaco Notes
- Alain Prost is the master of Monaco, lapping the entire field in the process
- Tambay, Surer, Mansell, Rosberg all bin it from points scoring positions
- Alboreto and Stohr scores their first points of the season following the carnage

1982 ROUND 7 - DETROIT
Weather is dry.

Image
After Cheever's brilliant 13th place finish in Monaco, Toleman are back to the pre-qualifying infamy.

Image
Fourth consecutive pole for Alain Prost - can anyone stop the Frenchman or his turbo-powered Renault?

Image
Detroit Notes
- Both Renaults out with turbo-related problems
- This leaves the door open for other teams with Brabham and Nelson Piquet the main benefactors
- Brian Henton with his first point of the season

1982 ROUND 8 - ÎLE NOTRE-DAME
Second part of the North American tour is raced in Montreal. Weather is dry.

Image
Daly and Ghinzani out. Biggest is headline is Guerra braking the Osella 1-2.

Image
Home hero Gilles Villeneuve takes the pole to the joy of the numerous Canadian fans. Renault look surprisingly vulnerable gere. In other news, Alan Jones once again in huge problems.

Image
Île Notre-Dame Notes
- Renault pair recover from the qualifying shock to take home another 1-2 finish
- Villeneuve's home race ends in tears as he retires from 3rd with three laps to go
- Defending champ Alan Jones' race comes to end as he makes contact with Piquet who is lapping him on lap 54

---

Standings have been updated on the wiki page.

It's the middle point of the season so pre-qualifying teams are re-assigned.

2nd R&D Period Results

Team - Investment - Gains (0-5*)
McLAREN - 500 cr - 4*
-
LOTUS - 500 cr - 2*
ENSIGN - 500 cr - 2*
-
RENAULT - 750 cr - 1*
ARROWS - 750 cr - 1*
TYRRELL - 500 cr - 1*
FERRARI - 250 cr - 1*
-
WILLIAMS - 1000 cr - 0*
LIGIER - 250 cr - 0*
ATS - 500 cr - 0*

Defending champions Williams have had an awful start to the season and it looks like the engineers are clueless as to why their car is so uncompetitive compared to their succesful 1980 and 1981 cars. The team is throwing all it has on to the development but unable to yield any results.

Meanwhile McLaren, fresh off a succesful North American tour, have managed to find big performance gains as they look to challenge for the top-3 positions in the constructors' championship.

Oh good grief. We'll throw another 1,000 cr at the problem though, because there is still a chance of making big gains in the constructors
