Welcome back everyone! Alan Jones and Williams won the 1981 championship for the second year in a row - can they make it three in 1982? We shall see!

CONTRACTS
A season begins with signing of engine & tyre suppliers. The listed supplier prices are minimum asking prices but teams can of course offer more money to a supplier. Teams can attempt to sign suppliers for 1-3 years long contracts. The price of engine/tyres will remain the same for the duration of the contract even if the manufacturer changes the price in the upcoming seasons.

Driver signing works largely the same way. Drivers can be signed to 1-3 years long contracts. Drivers' salaries aren't fixed but instead have expected salaries that they are asking from their future employers. Teams can offer lower salaries than the drivers are expecting but doing so will make the driver more likely to refuse the offer. Conversely a higher than expected salary will make the driver more likely to sign.

Pay drivers (listed with negative salaries) can only be signed to max. 1-year contracts. The negative salary next to their name implies the maximum amount they can pay for their seat per race.

The prices and salaries of multi-year contracts are paid yearly, not in one lump sum.

All the available suppliers, drivers and their respective prices/salaries are listed IN THIS SPREADSHEET.

The driver list contains only the most notable drivers but you are able to offer a contract to drivers also not on the list.

LOAN DEALS
Teams are allowed to sign more than two drivers to their team on the condition that the drivers are loaned out to other teams and land a racing seat for the season. Failure to land a racing seat will release a driver from their contract.

A team wishing to sign extra drivers to be loaned out must bid for them during driver bidding process separately from their main drivers' bids.
  • Extra drivers must be offered a salary greater than 0cr even if they were a pay-driver.
  • Offered contract length can be 1-3 years.
  • Loan team must be included in the bid.
  • The length of a loan deal is always a maximum of 1 season.
  • No extra monetary compensation between the two teams is allowed.

A team wishing to loan a driver from another team must bid for them during driver bidding process regularly among their other driver bids.
  • Loan drivers don't have to be offered salary since the owning team pays for their salary.
  • If the loaned driver is a pay-driver, the loaning team will receive a portion of their salary as a compensation. A portion of the driver's salary up to the amount they would bring as a pay-driver will go to the loaning team.
    - E.g. Team A signs pay-driver A. Stooge for a salary of 400cr and loans them to Team B. As a pay-driver A. Stooge would be able to bring Team B 20cr/race. Team B will receive 20cr x 16 races = 320cr as a compensation for the loan deal. Rest of the salary is kept by A.Stooge
  • The owning team of the driver must be included in the bid.
  • The length of a loan deal is always a maximum of 1 season.
  • No extra monetary compensation between the two teams is allowed.

The team bidding for extra drivers must co-operate with the team they intend to loan the driver to. Both teams will have to indicate in their bids that the driver is to be loaned from/to another team.




MID-SEASON R&D
There are three R&D periods during the season on which the teams can develop their chassis. A single period is 4-5 races long after which potential upgrades are installed to the chassis.

Before each R&D period the teams have to commit to developing their chassis by choosing their level of investment. Higher levels increase the chance for greater performance gain.
The levels and their prices are:
No R&D - 0 cr
Low - 250 cr
Moderate - 500 cr
High - 750 cr
All-in - 1000 cr



NEW CHASSIS R&D
Last R&D period of the season is reserved for development of next season’s chassis. Each team can spend between 2500-5000cr on R&D for a new chassis. Alternatively teams can develop an evolution of their previous chassis for prices between 1500-2500cr (smaller performance gain) or decide to race for another year with the same chassis (not recommended unless your team is on the brink of bankruptcy).

For single car teams these figures are: 2000-4000cr for new chassis, 1200-2000cr for chassis evolution. A single car team can expand to two cars for a one time cost of 1500cr.


DEBT AND BANKRUPTCY
Teams can go into debt during and in between seasons.

A team will be declared bankrupt if it is in debt at the end of a season for two years in a row.

Each team is expected to sign one supplier for both tyres and engines. Ferrari, Renault and Alfa Romeo don't have to bother with engine bids. Driver bidding process will begin after the suppliers have been signed.

ENGINES RNG

Renault, Alfa Romeo, Toleman and Ferrari have existing contracts.

MATRA
Matra is prepared to supply two teams. March were not interested to continue their affiliation but Arrows are interested in the French manufacturer's engines - as is Ligier to the surprise of no one.

Matra accepts both offers.


HART
Brian Hart's workshop in prepared to supply only one team and have an existing contract with Toleman. March Engineering has come knocking on their door however and want Hart engines.

1-70 Sorry but we simply don't have capacity to supply two teams at the moment
71-100 I guess we'll hire a couple more people to the assembly line

95! Brian Hart jumps at the opportunity to expand his engine business.

FORD
As the de facto engine supplier, Ford has an unlimited supply of the engine.

All other teams sign with Ford on one year deals.

BMW
BMW has announced they will be joining the sport as an engine manufacturer in 1983.

PIRELLI

Arguably the worst tyre of 1981, Pirelli, has done something right when marketing their tyres. A total of 8 teams are looking for a deal with the Italian firm. However, Pirelli is only prepared to supply 4 teams in 1982 as they concentrate on developing their tyres. They already have a running contract with Lotus so they have three places up for grabs. Lotus however have proposed a deal to Michelin which has severed their relationship with Pirelli.

1-70 - It was a mistake, everything continues as normal
71-95 - The contract has to be respected but don't expect Pirelli tyres in the future
96-100 - Consider the contract breached

2! - Pirelli let's it slide and is looking forward to a long and succesful tenure with Lotus. This leaves Pirelli with three open slots.

1-35 Brabham
36-60 Alfa Romeo
61-75 Arrows
76-80 Ensign
81-85 Fittipaldi
86-90 Osella
91-95 ATS
96-100 March

27, 75, 57! - Brabham, Arrows and Alfa Romeo land Pirelli deals.

Before placing bids, what was Theodores budget before prize money at the end of 81? Just so as not to overspend (I couldn’t see a link to the previous years spreadsheet)

Thus,
Boutsen, if signed, will not provide financial backing to his team and can only be loaned out on a 1-year contract.
C. Fabi can only be loaned out on a 1-year contract.
Bellof is not on the driver shortlist and requires separate RNG to determine his pay-driver status.

1-90 He and his backers don't feel ready for F1
91-100 We'll scrape something together fro Stefan
44!

Bellof, if signed, will not provide financial backing to his team and can only be loaned out on a 1-year contract.

Note that these drivers have not joined Williams YDP yet as they are still subject to RNG.

Also, Keke Rosberg is under contract with Lotus so I recommend speaking with Shawn if you'd like improve your chances of signing him.

Yep, the "3 years" referred to how long I wanted to keep them in the YDP, not how long I might want to farm them out on loan

I had forgotten about the no extra monies

And I saw he was under contract, but it's fun to throw potshots around

We are waiting for March, Fittipaldi and Ferrari to announce their plans for 1982. I will give you until Monday 20:00 EEST to make your bids.

In other news, Iso Masa seems to have gone AWOL so I give you _gg_ the chance to take over Toleman. They are in grim state financially at the moment but I feel like the drivers - especially Cheever wouldn't mind if his contract was terminated and he could head back to the states to do some Indycar or something.

Two-time champion Alan Jones has an offer to chase third title with Williams.

Frank Williams is looking for fresh young guns to join his YDP stable and wishes to unite the Fabi brothers at Osella.

René Arnoux was left without a seat for 1981 but is in high demand after a year out. No one is matching his asking price but Arrows is coming close and has the best package now that Renault isn't interested anymore.

The 1978 European F2 champion Bruno Giacomelli had a quiet season in 1981 with Theodore. He has two offers on the table: 1-year deal with Alfa Romeo or a 2-year deal with a thick pay-cheque with March.
