The driver behind, or in this case in front of, this tragedy was Dome's Neil "Murderer" McEwan. The British upstart, racing in his first-ever international series, appeared out of his depth as he wandered out of the pit lane and out into the racing line. He has immediately been handed a ban for the rest of the season, but it remains to be seen if any organisation in motorsports will ever trust the British driver again. And frankly, why would they? In all my long years of covering motorsport, it was the most negligent thing I have ever chosen to see, and resulted in a pointless loss of life.

"Thank you Anna. We are of course reporting from France with fresh updates in the saga surrounding the horror crash suffered by young Japanese driver Ukyo Katayama. It had originally been reported by some outlets - led apparently by AutoMobile News, that Katayama had lost his life in the accident.

"We are now hearing from sources within the driver's Pacific Racing team that this week's crash was indeed very severe, but that after excellent work from the track marshals and successful surgical intervention at one of France's leading hospitals, Katayama will make a full recovery. The driver had sustained fractures in the incident, but nothing that will stop him driving again in the future.

"The BBC would like to apologise to Mr Katayama and his family for incorrectly reporting the rumours that he had passed away.

Team statement from Dome Co. Ltd wrote:The Dome motorsports group would today like to announce that we will not be appealing the ban handed to Neil McEwan in relation to his accident at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit. However, we wish to emphasise that he has the full support of the team for 1992, and that we will be continuing to engage his services into the new season. He has impressed us very much behind the scenes, and we are sure that he will bounce back from this as a better driver.

We will be pursuing action against the "journalist" who incorrectly reported that Ukyo Katayama had lost his life in the crash, and who dishonoured our driver by dubbing him "Murderer".

We would most importantly like to extend our very best wishes to Ukyo Katayama as he recovers from injuries sustained in the crash. We hope to see him back on the racetrack as soon as possible.
