One narrative that is forming further down the grid is that of Footwork Team Oreca establishing themselves as the leading French team on the grid. Although they have so far recorded only one classified finish (a respectable 9th place for Fushida at Interlagos), the team's qualifying pace has been strong and hugely improved from their 1993 form. Team principal Hugues de Chaunac credits driver Neil McEwan with a lot of the improvement.

"Honestly, the amount of work he's put in over the last 18 months to get us to this point is truly remarkable. If it had been possible, I'm sure he'd have been at Magny-Cours eight days a week to test the car. He might not have points in the bag yet, but it's only a matter of time before he gets that result. Our pace has been even better than we could have imagined."

When pressed about rumours that he might be approaching faster drivers to take Fushida's seat, M. de Chaunac refused to be drawn, saying that "Kazuki is a valued member of our team, and he knows that."

It is with great tragedy that we announce the death of Bernd Schneider, who perished during qualifying for the Gran Premio di San Marino. The Simtek S941 suffered a front wing failure at the Villeneuve corner and collided with the wall at around 200mph. Mr Schneider was airlifted to hospital but despite the best efforts of the medical team on site, he unfortunately died of extensive head trauma. He was 29 years old.

On Lap 6, his Williams car suffered a mechanical problem and veered into the wall at the fast Tamburello corner at around 190mph and burst into flames. Despite the efforts of the medical team, the circuit marshals were ill-equipped to tackle the blaze - the Italian organisers seemingly forgetting to hand them functional fire extinguishers. After a lengthy period of time, the Brit was extracted from the car and airlifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead of a mixture of third degree burns and asphyxiation from smoke inhalation. He was 29 years old.

Footwork Team Oreca statement wrote: As a individuals, as teams and as a sport, we mourn the losses of both Bernd Schneider and Johnny Herbert. They were two of the best drivers on every track they ever went out on, in any car they happened to drive. That both have been taken from us so tragically and senselessly is almost too much to comprehent.

This is truly the blackest weekend our sport has ever had. We must make immediate changes so that nobody goes out on another Formula One racetrack and fails to come back ever again.

Nobody was really thinking about Mika's points at the end of the race - we were just relieved to get him back in the garage in one piece.

Williams will leave the #26 car unoccupied for the Monaco Grand Prix as a sign of respect towards our fallen driver. After that, our test driver Tom Kristensen will take the car at rounds that don't collide with his commitments in the Japanese Touring Car Championship. The driver of the #26 car for the rounds affected (French and Portugese Grand Prix) will be announced at a later date.
