Maiden victory for Burns

Subaru's young star Richard Burns took the first win of his career in the grueling conditions of Rally Argentina. The Subaru driver had a near flawless run in a rally that saw most of the field, including the championship hopefuls McRae, Sainz and Mäkinen, run into various issues. The drama started already on stage 2 when championship leader Colin McRae encountered mechanical issues dropping five and a half minutes right on the first proper test. Didier Auriol took the early lead but had to concede it quickly as the Subaru pair of McRae and Burns started their show. With 21 stage wins of the possible 23 (Burns with 9, McRae with 12) there was no stopping for the blue cars even though a late mechanical scare on the penultimate stage cut Burns' lead from 1:39 to just 35 seconds over Sainz. Clutch performance on the last test saw Burns finish comfortably ahead to win the rally while team-mate McRae climbed on to the third step on the podium.

2-Litre World Cup had their fair share of twists and turns as well as the rough conditions put the front-wheel drive cars to a test. VW's Manfred Stohl, despite an issue costing him 50 seconds on stage 11, as the person who handled the tough conditions the bestm winning his class and finishing a decent 8th overall in the process. Gwyndaf Evans in second continued his and Ford's excellent form before the Škoda pair of Raies and Sibera. Unfortunately the Czech team hadn't nominated Sibera for manufacturer points so they remain on the bottom of the 2-Litre championship table.

McRae makes it three in a row for Subaru

Subaru has been a roll lately in WRC. Wins in the previous two rounds on Corsica and Argentina sees the Japanese team lead the championship with Colin McRae also leading the drivers' championship. McRae was quick to set the pace in Greece as well. A fastest time by 15 seconds over rival Sainz on stage 1 was a sign of things to come as he cruised to the win with 12 stage wins of 20. Richard Burns was battling with McRae throughout the rally but a rare mistake forced the Rally Argentina winner to retire. Sainz was second, unable to match the speed of the Subarus while Mitsubishi's Mäkinen recovered nicely to third overall despite being as low as 31st after losing time on stage 1. Attrition was high through the field with most notable casualties of the cruel conditions including the Escorts of Loix and Grönholm and both factory Celicas. Thomas Rådström in a privately entered Celica was however able to reclaim some hope for the Japanese manufacturer in fifth.

In the 2-Litre World Cup SEAT's Erwin Weber was the early pace-setter before losing over three minutes due to mechanical issues on stage 5. Manfred Stohl was his beneficiary, setting exceptional pace with the upgraded Golf Kit Car. Greece's harsh conditions would be the deciding factor for the Kit Car class as the small hatchbacks struggled with the rocky conditions. Emil Triner, Harri Rovanperä, Toni Gardemeister, Pavel Sibera and Grégoire de Mevius were all drivers who at some point challenged for a podium spot in 2-Litres but weren't able to last until the finish. In the end it was Ford's ever so reliable Gwyndaf Evans who took blue oval's first win of the season by 38 seconds over Stohl who was charging back after a puncture on stage 15. VW's non-scoring entry Raimund Baumschlager completed the podium in class.

McRae dominates in a Subaru 1-2

Colin McRae continued his dominating performances in WRC with a commanding victory on the fast and flowing New Zealander roads. The Scotsman lead the rally from the start, bagging in 15 stage wins from 24 stages in the process. Main rivals Carlos Sainz and Tommi Mäkinen were within striking distance after Friday but a crash on day 2 for Sainz put the Ford driver out of the rally. Mäkinen tried his best to put pressure on McRae with four stage wins to his name but a mistake on Sunday morning dropped him down to third overall. Richard Burns, who had been lurking behind the top drivers all rally was quick to capitalise and secure a marvellous 1-2 finish for Subaru.

2-Litre World Cup rally was all Volkswagen and Rovanperä on top. Gardemeister was the early pace-setter but a mechanical issue on stage 6 dropped him down fourth in class behind Stohl, Weber and Evans. Rovanperä, who had been third in class, lost almost five minutes on the same stage due to gearbox issues - he was now dead last and eager for a comeback.

Saturday was a day of attrition. Bernardini, Evans, Stohl and Gomez all were out by the night service. Gardemeister's lead was now extremely comfortable four and a half minutes over Rovaperä who had battled back into P2. Weber and Sibera however were only five seconds behind but were unlikely to be able to match the Nissan driver's speed. Sunday provided no drama which meant a victory for Toni Gardemeister and Volkswagen, moving the German manufacturer to the top of the 2-Litre standings.

Hyundai, after some teething troubles during testing, opted to skip the New Zealand rally and will instead make its debut at the next rally (Rally Finland) with two Coupé Kit Cars, alongside Italy and Rally GB. This will be downsized to one car for Indonesia and Australia.

Hyundai will attempt to sign 1 driver for the rest of the 1997 season alongside one-off drivers for the second car.

Car 1: (until the end of 1997; in order of preference)
Gilberto Pianezzola (80,000cr in total)
Uwe Nittel (75,000cr in total)
Kenneth Bäcklund (75,000cr in total)

Car 2: (one-offs)
Finland - Jarmo Kytölehto (15,000cr)
Italy - Fabio Danti (10,000cr)
Rally GB - Martin Rowe (5,000cr)

Setup points for the Kit Car: Loose +1 / Tarmac -1? (it's set on TBC so I have no clue whether I should put it in)

That is correct, thanks!

Driver RNG's:

Italy's promising Gilberto Pianezzola is approached by Hyundai (80.000cr)
1-95 Signs
96-100 Has retired from rallying

2! Pianezzola signs with Hyundai (and for RP purposes might have possibly been the test driver which would explain his absence from racing in 1997?)

---

Fresh off his podium in home event in 1996, Jarmo Kytölehto is wanted by Hyundai for Finland.

1-85 Already has a deal to rent a Escort WRC for Rally Finland and will drive it
86-100 Perhaps a deal with Hyundai could help seal a deal for 1998?

44! Kytölehto will tackle Finland with WRC machinery

---

Italian hillclimb specialist Fabio Danti is wanted to drive Rallye San Remo for Hyundai

1-70 He signs
71-100 His Italian hillclimb team (running Škodas) blocks the deal

68! It's a tough battle with his Škoda team but he gets the green light and will drive a Hyundai in San Remo.

---

Martin Rowe has been driving a Renault Mégane in teh British championship this year but Hyundai want him to drive Coupé in RAC.

1-80 Rowe is leading the British championship in his Renault and thus sees no point in jumping ship to an unknown team for peanuts
81-100 It's just a one-off with a good potential sealing a deal for 1998, right?

22! Rowe is happy to stay with his domestic team for the time being but is welcoming phone calls regarding 1998 plans.

Wayne Bell is Hyundai driver in Australia so a deal should be a no-brainer
1-95 Agrees
96-100 Wants a longer contract in order to come to Europe
81! Bell will drive a Hyundai in RAC Rally.

-

Sebastian Lindholm is dominant driver in the Finnish championship but is looking to enter his Escort Cosworth for Rally Finland
1-75 Escort gives a better chance at catching the attention of works teams
76-100 Hyundai project sounds interesting so let's try it
43! Lindholm will drive his trusty Escort

-

Esa Saarenpää is the 1992 Finnish champion who was lately driven an outdated Audi (the same with which he won the 1992 title), Hyundai offers him a works entry but it's a kit car:
1-75 Signed!
76-100 Eh, I prefer AWD
61! Experienced Saarenpää will join Hyundai for Finland

McRae's third in a row in shocks the Finns

Rally Finland saw a healthy number of local privateers enter, among them the four-time champion Juha Kankkunen who was driving a Escort WRC. There was a new challenger unveiled as well as Toyota brought in their new Corolla WRC. Kankkunen started the rally in excellent form taking a couple of stage wins and battling for the lead with McRae and Mäkinen. Kankkunen took the rally lead on stage 7 but unfortunately his run ended three stages later when the water pump in his car broke. Mäkinen had issues as well, dropping him almost two minutes behind McRae to sixth overall. Sainz and privateer Kytölehto were promoted to podium places but they too were already over a minute behind the championship leader.

From then on it was calculated drive from McRae as he cruised to his third straight victory without issues. Didier Auriol had struggled early on with the setup of the new Corolla but managed to climb to second, just barely edging out Sainz who was disappointed in third. Mäkinen's comeback drive which saw him win six of the final day's eight stages only netted him fourth place.

There was new blood in the F2 category as well as Škoda brought their new Octavia Kit Car, piloted by Sibera and local drivers Mökkönen and Harkki. Despite promising speed (both Finns were constantly in top-5 in class) all three of the new Octavias would retire from the rally. Another promising newcomer was Hyundai who entered the championship with promising Italian Gilberto Pianezzola and experienced Finn Esa Saarenpää. Although not as fast the Octavia, Saarenpää was on course to finish fourth in the Coupé's début before making a costly mistake on last stage of the rally, dropping him to eight in class.

There was no coubt of the best team however. Volkswagen dominated the rally from the go with Stohl and Gardemeister both taking eight stage wins. Gap from Stohl in second to Opel privateer Svan in third was over two minutes. Nissan star Harri Rovanperä was the closest match to the VW pair but early engine issues costing him over four minutes prevented him from challenging for a home victory.

Eriksson magic in Indonesia

After the fast and flowing Finnish stages it was a complete change in scenery as the teams headed to Indonesia. Toyota had done excellent job preparing for the rally as Kenneth Eriksson shot to the lead of the rally right out of the gates. At the end of day one his lead over Subaru's Richard Burns was 25 seconds. However the gaps overall were remarkably small as Auriol, Loix, Mäkinen and Grönholm were all within 45 seconds from the leading Swede. But where were title protagonists McRae and Sainz? McRae's rally went wrong already at the start of stage 1 as his Subaru refused to fire from the start line. Four and a half minutes of repairs later the Subaru driver was back on track. Sainz on the other hand was struggling with rhythm and finally went off on stage 6.

Last two days saw the top-6 shuffle positions around as Eriksson extended his lead and winning margin to almost 1,5 minutes. Six stage wins from 22 was the most of any driver, underlining the Toyota driver's excellent form. Richard Burns looked set to finish second but a spin into a ditch on the final test almost cost it. In the end he edged out Mäkinen by just half a second.

Kit car category was once again a VW show. Manfred Stohl took a commanding victory over his Austrian teammate Raimund Baumschlager. Rovanperä and Ford's Evans were the two closest to the VW's but both lost time dut to driving errors - Rovanperä even retiring due to one. That opened the door for Nissan's local ace Karamjit Singh to claim a proud third place finish. Pianezzola in fourth showed Hyundai's promising pace ahead of home round in San Remo.

Ibiza Kit Car has proven unreliable in 1997.

SEAT Sport has announced their decision to end the Ibiza Kit Car project following the 1997 season. The defending 2-Litre World Cup champions have struggled in 1997 with drivers Erwin Weber and Oriol Gómez only lying in seventh place in the championship standings.

Instead, the Spanish marque will now shift their focus into developing a WRC car based on the Córdoba model. Early rumours estimate that the car could be ready for the second half of 1998.

Customers are still able to buy Ibiza Kit Cars although no major development is to be expected.

Privateer Liatti takes a shock victory in San Remo

Championship hopefuls McRae, Sainz and Mäkinen emerged as the early favourites on the twist and damp roads of Rallye San Remo. Local star Piero Liatti in a privately entered Impreza WRC and Peugeot's experienced François Delecour accompanied them in the battle stage wins and rally lead. The quintet stayed together up until stage 15 when Delecour's Peugeot broke down, forcing him to retire. Last stage of day 2 provided further drama as Carlos Sainz also encountered mechanical issues but was able to nurture his Escort to the service park, dropping over 5 minutes in the process. Further down Richard Burns crashed out on stage 15.

Liatti begun day 3 as the leader but McRae quickly re-took the lead. The joy was short-lived as the championship leader's Subaru lost oil pressure on stage 21. Liatti was promoted to the lead of the rally which he held until the end to claim a proud home victory over Tommi Mäkinen who suddenly found him back in the title hunt. Belgium's Bruno Thiry capped off the fine rally for privateers as he pipped Panizzi to third on the final stage of the rally. Factory Escorts of Bugalski, Loix and Sainz meanwhile were down in 6th, 7th and 9th.

2-litre category was won by Panizzi after a commanding drive after Delecour's retirement. Peugeot followed with three cars in a fine display by the French team. The rally was particularly rough for the kit car drivers as a huge number of drivers made costly errors throughout the rally. Patricularly disappointing the rally was for Nissan who had high hopes for their new Almera Kit Car but in the end none of their drivers made it to the finish.

McRae and Subaru clinch titles with a brilliant victory in Australia

Tommi Mäkinen had climbed up to second in the standings following his second place finish in San Remo. Thus, he was Colin McRae's nearest challenger, although he would need to score well on the remaining to rallies to overcome the 23 point deficit. An early roll and retirement on stage 2 however ended Mäkinen's title hopes leaving Carlos Sainz as the sole challenger for McRae. The Spaniard tried his best but engine-related issues hindered him as he ended day 1 in third, a minute behind leading McRae and Toyota's Kenneth Eriksson.

Second day Sainz's woes would continue as his rally came to an end on stage 16 with mechanical issues. McRae would go on to win the rally with a dominating performance over Eriksson and Subaru team mate Burns whose third place was enough to clinch Subaru the manufacturers' title. Auriol was fourth ahead of Juha Kankkunen who made his début for Mitsubishi. The four-time world champion recorded a couple of stage wins but had trouble settling in with the new car.

2-Litre World Cup saw Harri Rovanperä take Nissan's new Almera Kit Car's maiden victory. Volkswagen reliable pair of Gardemeister and Stohl finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, enough for VW to win the 2-Litre World Cup title. Wayne Bell in a privately entered Hyundai made good impression but many in the service park wondered why the Australian wasn't a manufacturer entry. He will be though in the season ending rally in RAC.

So big congratulations to Subaru, Colin McRae and Volkswagen! Titles are sealed up but we have one rally to go in the season.
