Copa Marlboro 1976

Ricardo Mejía Constants wrote:...it was a bold move, ambitious and desperate in almost equal measure. We didn't expect much to come out of it -or even anything at all-, but the truth is that we were quite sick of sitting idly by while the entire motorsports scene was withering away. We had the means, the ability, and with a bit of political goodwill the venues to revitalize the scene and make it worth our while. It had remained a chip on my shoulder ever since political opposition killed the Colombian Grand Prix in its infancy and forced the closure of my track. Here was an opportunity to at the very least put it to good use, and in time maybe to give it all another go...
It is the 18th of March, 1976.
The letters sent have had an astounding effect.
The President himself, ALFONSO LÓPEZ MICHELSEN seems to have intervened to make the requests outlined in them a reality. The Ministry of Industry has spoken to and brought several members of the guild onboard and agreed to provide some funding to get a new championship off the ground. The ministry of Communications has agreed to broadcast the races on Channel 2 through Inravisión. And most intriguing of all, it seems people are losing faith on the long term prospects of the current National Touring car Championship, the CNA, for we have also received commitments from Uniroyal-Icollantas to provide tyres, and Phillip Morris Colombia has also comitted to provide funding for the new series under a title sponsorhip. The new series shall be known as the Copa Marlboro.
Most surprisingly of all, the Defense Ministry has also promised its support, and will create a temporary circuit on the grounds of the Military School for Cadets (ESMIC), which will be available for shakedown purposes on the second week of June.

Given the sudden nature of this announcement the championship will only be able to start by the second half of the year, and most national venues and most drivers are already comitted to the CNA. Depending on the success of our own championship, this situation is bound to change. The dearth of venues could compromise the viability of this endeavour, but surprisingly the politicians have also come to our aid, and the pressure has finally brought the Automovil Club de Colombia - ACC to come to the table and begrudgingly reopen the Ricardo Mejía. We will have races in the capital at long last.

SIGNUPS
Users may join by getting in touch with the series admin via forum post or Discord. Players may control of one team and one driver. It is possible for a driver to be team manager - but not entirely advisable. It is also possible for a driver to enter as independent, with all the benefits and hindrances that entails.

FORMAT
Given the relative haste in which the championship has been put together, races will only take place in the second half of the year.
Qualifying will be run on Saturday. Two races will be held on Sunday: First heat runs in normal qualifying order, second heat runs with inverted grid for the first 10 positions. Both races are run to 60km distances. Points are given for both heats. Teams score points for only the first two vehicles classified in each race.
Entrants to a race weekend are not limited, but the number of starters is capped at 30.

TEAMS
Users may create a team (or ask for a historical team from the series admin) to control. When creating a new team, the name of the team manager and the location where that team will operate must also be given, as well as the number of cars same team intends to run. Depending on the location of the team, the initial funds will be RNG'd. Then the team may approach any number of drivers to sign for its squad. Each driver must be given a car. cars cannot be shared between drivers (unless in cases of force majeure such as death or injury). In case a driver already has a car, the team is not required to purchase a car for said driver, but must be responsible of all running costs for the same for the duration of the season.
Number of teams is capped at 8. Teams can field anything from 1 to 4 cars. Independent entrants can only run 1 car, and are not restricted by the maximum team number cap.
Teams are also free to determine which if any of its cars enter any given race.
Should funding ever become an issue, it is always possible to ask a SPONSOR for money. Users are encouraged to make their own inquiries, however should you be stumped feel free to contact your admin for help on this point.

DRIVERS
Available drivers list is available in the spreadsheet. In the list are their current availability, desire to take part in the series, any particular constraints said driver may have, and whether they already own a car to take part with. Teams can make use of this car or buy their own when employing a driver. Drivers may only be hired for one season. AI controlled drivers will have their allocations RNG'd. User controlled driver's actions will be controlled by the user, but should the user overrule the conditions of the driver stated in the sheet, they will take a financial penalty befitting the deviation.
Users may also add drivers to the table, real, canon or otherwise, and their budget will be RNG'd. Given the nature of the series, said drivers are likely to cop a financial penalty to take part in the series.
Drivers have a location associated with it, which modifies RNG values regarding things such as sponsorships and steward sympathy on given venues.

DEALERSHIPS
With the exception of imported vehicles, all cars entered for the series must be purchased through one of the dealerships that has in interest in the series. The acquisition of spare parts is also ran through them, wherever necessary.
Dealerships may create a team and enter and leave the series at any moment. These teams are always controlled by the AI, and their entries are always accepted automatically. Mechanically however, Dealership teams are indistinct from user controlled teams, with the exception of upgrades, which they will make available to themselves before releasing it to customers.

CARS
Vehicles are restricted to Petrol engines, maximum of 4 cylinders, maximum displacement 1600cc, 4 wheels, no AWD.
Cars available in the market for the current year are listed in the spreadsheet. It is possible to request a particular model of the mentioned brands through a dealership.
It is possible to import a car of a brand not on the list, given it complies with the above requirements.
Every purchase has a timeline involved with it which will determine time of delivery. This will be RNG'd on a Delivery/Dealership basis.

MISCELLANEOUS
Current president is ALFONSO LÓPEZ MICHELSEN
Government is moderate reformist.
Current public order rating is 3/10. (Lower is better)

Happy racing! Signups are OPEN.

Team Name: Grupo Aeromarine Internacional S.A. (GAISA)
Team Manager: Eduardo Manuel Gaviria Restrepo
Base of Operations: Cartagena

With a burgeoning reputation as one of Colombia's foremost specialist freight forwarders, GAISA, and its indefatigable President, Eduardo Manuel Gaviria, has seized upon the Copa Marlboro as a means to raise its own profile, whether through showcasing its myriad ties with the titans of Colombian industry, or the glamour and cachet of the exquisitely machined, state of the art automobiles imported from overseas regularly featuring on GAISA chartered freighters and flights bound for well-heeled Cartagenans.

More than anything, Gaviria wishes to indelibly associate GAISA and the Copa Marlboro as symbols of a new, confident, and modern Colombia - and helpfully reap in some new business in the process of selling the Colombian Dream.

Team Name: Automotriz Ortiz de Buenaventura

Señor Ortiz runs a fairly successful chain of auto parts stores across the Colombian coast. Forming an alliance here with one of the dealers could have major implications for his business and racing team.

Team: Grupo Baumann
Owner: Ulrica Baumann
Location: Barranquilla, Department of Atlantico

Background: the daughter of German emigres from Thuringia, Ulrica Baumann firmly believes the future of automotion lies in the motherland, at Eisenach's Wartburg factory, in the German Democratic Republic. Baumann's vision has raised many an eyebrow amongst her fellow German-Colombians, let alone the wider Colombian motoring scene. Nevertheless, she is confident that not only will the Wartburg be a hit amongst Colombian motorists, it will serve as a shining example of East-West co-operation not just in Colombia, but to the wider world.

Sheet has been updated with proper budgets. If you need additional cash, you can:

-Try another round of fundraising and see how much more money you can get.
-Approach a sponsor and ask them for money.
-Try hiring a paying driver. They will be more likely to join a team if the promised cars are actual cars.
-Bounce any wild ideas with your series admin and see what happens.

Start considering the issues of cars and drivers. They can be settled simultaneously, and all berths will be decided over three separate rounds. Additional entrants are still allowed, and the AI and unassigned drivers may also start making moves of their own as well. These shall be reflected on the sheet after each round.

Happy hunting!

Don Eduardo has reached out to the following prospective partners for financing:

Fabrica Chrysler Colombiana De Automotores, S.A. (Colmotores):

In addition to the existing business GAISA handles for Colmotores, arranging regular shipments of subcomponents from across the Atlantic and the Caribbean alike, GAISA intends on acquiring a prestigious sporting import from Chrysler Europe for the Copa - one that could feasibly elevate Chrysler Colmotores above the fray of an increasingly congested domestic market in the Colombian public's consciousness.

Eli Lilly Interamericana, Inc.:

GAISA has recently invested in a state-of-the-art, temperature controlled warehouse - perfect for the compliant and safe storage of perishable products, including sensitive pharmaceuticals, in part intended to push GAISA's tenders to become Eli Lilly's sole logistics provider in-country over the line.

General Electric De Colombia, S.A.:

As a specialist freight forwarder, GAISA prides itself on being one of the few brokers in Colombia capable of providing white glove services for non-standard freight - such as cutting-edge turbines from General Electric. GAISA's established partnerships with the country's myriad carriers may also grease some wheels for GE's future business in Colombia.

Shell Colombiana, S.A.:

GAISA's role as an NVOCC has entailed chartering several tankers for the import of oil and gas into Colombia for Shell, and with ocean carrier deregulation on the horizon, GAISA believes that it can provide further marginal value for energy shippers such as Shell down the road. Don Eduardo has further guaranteed that GAISA's cars would exclusively use Shell petrol, to a rather beleaguered and bemused junior Shell executive.

Avianca S.A:

The pride of Colombia, the standard bearer and flag carrier of the country, GAISA believes that nothing would better showcase the new Colombia better than a speedy, glamorous, and Avianca sponsored European import, flown in on an Avianca Jumbo as a GAISA brokered shipment. Don Eduardo might also throw in some guaranteed purchases for Avianca belly capacity come the next peak freight season.

I thought I'd provide some clarity for the bidding process henceforth. From this point on, whenever a user carries out an action, the limits shall be the following:

Raising funds:
A team owner may raise funds from its own purse twice per year. It may not be done concurrently with with commercial work (contacting sponsors).

Contacting sponsors:
A team owner may contact 5 companies for sponsorship purposes per round (out of a total of 2 + prelim) during the off season, and 2 in between races, twice during the season.

Hiring drivers:
Team owners may contact 3 drivers per car per round during the off season, and 2 in between races. They shall be sorted by first, second and third choice, and handled as is customary in Alt-F1.

Dealerships:
You must specify the dealership you are approaching for the car purchase. Limit is one per round.

Senor Elano manages to persuade some elusive Colombian sponsors with his charming charisma and promising attitude.

Aerosucre
The great Colombian airliner is proud to sponsor Elano for his racing career. So far what we know he doesn't have to pay any money for traveling to race tracks or his home in Spain.

Banco de Occidente Credencial = Bank

Vanguardia Liberal = Newspaper
Elano struck a deal with Vanguardia to not only show people to have more insight about how to manage a team and driving in Copa Marlboro but also the racing series will have a 4 page report in every race week!

Manuelita= Agriculture

Winbroco will apply to the following organisations for sponsorship:

Image British Leyland
Winbroco will also accept an Austin Allegro (to use as our racing car) as payment in kind for the sponsorship deal.

Image Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia
The car would carry Juan Valdez decals if this deal was agreed.

Image Carnes y Alimentos Caribeño Antioquia S.A.
A local company specialising in some of Mr Winchester's favourite foods from around the region.

Image Massy Group
If this sponsorship deal is agreed, we will paint our car in the Massy Group colours:

Image Scalextric
As part of this deal, we would also become the official importer of Scalextric sets for resale in Colombia.

Equipo Perla del Caribe approaches the following companies for sponsorship or partnership:

SOFASA
We hope to establish support for using Renault 12s in the coming series, which would put the team on a strong first foot among all the teams. As PdC has international presence this can also be a fantastic opportunity for Renault to market its vehicles along the Caribbean coast.

Bavarian Brewery
As we carry their beverages at our fine hotels and resorts we ask for investment from one of Colombia's most respected companies. Of course we will help market their drinks at any race weekend we take part in.

El Universal
As Cartagena's main newspaper we would be honored to spread the word of our favorite newspaper across Colombia. With the growing competition in news we believe a potential partnership can keep El Universal ahead of the more established news outlets and help bring eyes to Cartagena.
In addition we offer to provide race updates and even behind-the-scenes looks at our garage to show a racing team is run.

Banco de Colombia
PdC has long relied on the country's most prestigious bank to build expand Colombia's tourism industry. We would not be her without their financial help, and we offer a chance for the bank to get it name out to more Colombians and to international prospects coming to the Caribbean coast.

Grupo Éxito
They are expanding to the coastal departments, and we think we can get more of our patrons into their stores. I think there is a business opportunity if they advertise for our team.

Drivers Hernan Galeano, Jorge Ortega, Guillermo Pieschacon, and Cristian Paris, unhappy at not having received any offer to drive for any team thus far on the roster, have decided to band together and create a new team: Cuatro Ases, based out of Bogota.
They need to scramble to get things on the road as quickly as possible, but each driver has vowed to bring their own car to the table to take part in the series from the outset.

Be advised, cost of attending is 50% those of a standard race weekend.

Escuderia Familia Villalba would like to request sponsorship from the City-owned Water and Electricity company EmCali, as well as Liberal newspaper Vanguardia Liberal, with our sales pitch being that it would be fitting for the paper's values to promote a small team like us and get a behind the scene look at how a working class family-run racing team works without the budgets of the works teams.

We'd also like to inquire the availability and willingness of the following drivers to bring some money alongside their wage demands:

-Carlos Rodriguez (VAC)
- Ricardo Ibarbo (ANT)
- Miguel Angel Guerra (ARG)

Ortiz gives the following sponsors some calls:
Postobón: We would be open to advertising a Postobón subsidiary that isn't already present on the grid. This would counter the exposure that Coca-Cola gets with the Vehicolsa team.
Jeno's Pizza: We are aware of your plans to expand by opening more locations in 1976, and having your logos on our FIAT 128 will attract future customers.
Bancolombia: Rival banks like the Banco de Occidente are in the series, and sponsoring us would counter their exposure.
Auteco: We are involved in the same industry, and Ortiz is open to collaboration both on and off the track. Automotriz Ortiz can become a distributor of parts for Auteco-made scooters.
Líneas Aéreas Suramericanas: Rival airline Aerosucre is already in this series sponsoring some guy from Spain, but we are open to being sponsored by a business closer to home.

Additionally, Ortiz will approach Francisco Trimiño for a full-time drive, racing his FIAT 128 on behalf of the team. He will officially be offered a salary when he specifies his terms.

Firstly, Perla del Caribe will approach the following sponsors:

Leonisa
Colombia's prestigious fashion brand is a common sight along the coast thanks to our hotels hosting their wares and places for the well-to-do to show off their outfits. We can think of no better team to seek sponsorship from to market their wares to customers elsewhere in Colombia.

Caracol
Colombia's premier racing series needs TV and radio attention to really get to a nation-wide audience. With our proven ability to excel in getting new customers short and long-term we are confident we can work with Caracol to promote the new racing series across Colombia.

Empresa Colombiana de Petróleos S.A. / EcoPetrol
EcoPetrol is the heart of Cartegena's industry with its refinery. As the team with the closest ties to Cartagena we think we can make the most impact promoting EcoPetrol's name and products. We are also interested in running oil provided by EcoPetrol if that is on the table for Copa Marlboro.

AeroNorte Ltda.
Copa Marlboro is attracting quite a few airline sponsorships, and we can provide ample exposure for AeroNorte to keep up with this stiff competition.

Concurso Nacional de Belleza de Colombia
Miss Colombia is the pride of Colombian media and one of the ways Colombia markets itself to the world. As a recurring host for preliminary rounds for the competition we hope to use Copa Marlboro to bring Miss Colombia to new audiences.

Next, PdC will approach the following drivers. We prefer them for a full-time ride, otherwise we will approach until the full season for 1 car is met:

Rodolfo Azuero
Julio D'Angelo

Thirdly, PdC will approach Crump y Cía. to purchase 1 Simca 1000.

Whoever I sign this round will run this car and the pre-season test.

After an agonising few sponsor attempts Senor Elano decides to go big or go home.
he is going to purchase a Renault 6 from Autos Francia in Bogota, then painting the car by colours of aerosucre.
Senor Elano intends to be there in pre season testing.

He is also going to attempt 3 new sponsorship attempts

Carulla: this giant supermarket and wholesale chain is doing a successful job since 1905, Elano believes that by having a sponsorship deal with them they will export some goods to Spain and improving their food wholesale business all along.

RTI Producciones = Television and Entertainment

RTI is not only known for being producing some great tv and entertainment shows, but also they have a sport department, by convincing them to sponsor him, he is intends to plan to make a documentary based of his racing career and Copa Marlboro in total.

and finally Organizacion Corona = Furnishings and more further details are TBA

Don Eduardo wrote: "This is a...bold proposition, I admit, Señor Roldán. Much of it dependent on the subjective - where I believe Colombia is going, where I hope Colombia is going. And...I have found some difficulty, convincing our compatriots, our colleagues, that the beginning of the New Colombia can be found in some scrappy motor racing championship like the Copa Marlboro.

But I believe in you - I trust that you see much the same things here in Cali, that I have in Cartagena. People are not rich, not yet...but richer. There is money in the air - in the way that people dress, what they eat, drink, and, yes, what they drive. One day, Colombians will cease to be satisfied with the pitiful leftover scraps thrown our way by the Europeans and the yanquis, and will want to import what they want.

What I am saying, Señor Roldán, are all things reserved for a good time into the future. The demand is not there yet. The knowledge is not there yet. But what better way is there to cultivate this desire for consumption, than a nationally televised series saturated with the stodgy, the unimaginative, and a dearth of ambition - and then for all of that to be shattered by a gleaming, state of the art Volkswagen Golf GTI, with Roldán Autos proudly emblazoned on the side?

What I am saying, Señor Roldán, is that I envisage a day where the best of us are lining up outside Roldán Autos, throwing pesos to order a Mercedes, or a Jaguar, or a Cadillac - where those cars are lovingly transported from the factory to your dealership by GAISA, and all of us shall joyously reap in the cash.
Don Eduardo has proposed an unconventional partnership with Roldán Autos, where Roldán shall purchase a Volkswagen Golf GTI for use by GAISA in the Copa Marlboro, and where GAISA will pay for all shipping, taxes, and import duties.
Don Eduardo wrote: "See, I hear things - I know about that beautiful new plane you're about to fly in from France. A true Rolls-Royce - wonderful! Now, god bless Avianca, but they would never do what you're doing. There is a hunger here, an ambition, that I believe will be the spirit of this country for the next decade.

You want to show off the plane; I'm planning to get a car, a German car, to complement that bird. What we want to sell is prestige, glamour - you want people to fly to Europe, I want people to buy things from Europe. And we'll have Aerocóndor, in big, bold letters on national television, on a gorgeous little German import running rings around all these Renaults and Chryslers.

Avianca left this space open, ripe for the taking. An advertisement at a hundred kilometres an hour, broadcast to television sets all across Colombia, selling dreams of Old World adventures and indulgences.
Don Eduardo has reached out to Aerocondor, following his polite, but disappointing rejection by Avianca.

Don Eduardo will further reach out to Postobón, Productos Ramo, and Semana for sponsorship.

Don Eduardo will inquire as to the availability of Juan M. Restrepo for the Copa Marlboro, both on the basis of his reputed ability, and because he likes his name.

Autoclub Paisa will approach:

Drivers
Ricardo Londoño
Gustavo Londoño
Pilar Mejía

We are looking to gather up the biggest Antioquian talent in the Londoño brothers, supplemented by Ms Mejía who will bring the much-needed feminine "touch" to the grid. The drivers will be offered a nominal salary and will be allowed to attend whichever rounds they want.

Sponsorship
Grupo Nutresa
Bicicletas Ositto
Restaurante "La Margarita"

As we know, stuck-up rolos get their panties in a twist the moment an Antioquian beats them in business fair and square. All the cards will no doubt be stacked against us, but fear not! If all the Antioquians come together onboard, the combined financial effort will help us acquire excellent Renault 4's and achieve grand success against all the odds anyway.
If the sponsor approach is successful, Grupo Nutresa will gain absolute control over the colour scheme of the car.

THIS MARKS THE PROPER BEGINNING OF THE SEASON
You all are now open and free to do all the actions you may deem necessary before the first race. Be warned in-season constraints now apply.

To clarify, these are:

A team owner may raise funds from its own purse twice per year. It may not be done concurrently with with commercial work (contacting sponsors).

Contacting sponsors:
A team owner may contact 2 companies in between races, twice during the season.

Hiring drivers:
Team owners may contact 2 drivers per car per round in between races. They shall be sorted by first and second choice, and handled as is customary in Alt-F1.

Dealerships:
You must specify the dealership you are approaching for the car purchase. Limit is one per round.

Happy hunting!

Escuderia Familia Villalba would like to call both Diario de Occidente and Almacenes la 14 to sponsor our car for this season. We feel that it would be good publicity for them to support a Cali-based racing team and show their support for members of the Cali Community.

Perla del Caribe will approach the following sponsors (First of 2 attempts during the season):

Motores de la Costa S.A.S. (Barranquilla)
We hope to run two full-time Chryslers in the series. In lieu of typical payout we ask for a discount on a second Simca Mil 1.3 (We want this model as it drastically cuts down on overhead costs throughout the season) as we argue that we provide a good platform to market your company against the bigger, more established dealers.

Aerocondor
We are excited to see Aerocondor interested in Copa Marlboro. As the more internationally inclined team we believe that our team is a better long-term partner for sponsorship and exposure for Colombia's growing tourist industry compared to the other teams. Doubly so since have promotional support from the broadcaster of the series and thus we will be getting more airtime compared to other teams.

Next, if we did NOT receive a car from Motores de la Costa S.A.S. in sponsor negotiations we will purchase 1 Simca Mil 1.3 from Motores de la Costa S.A.S. if funding allows it.

If neither of the above conditions are met, we approach Jorge Fonnegra to drive for the full season for our team but he must drive his own Simca Mil 1.3 for the full season.

If we did NOT approach Fonnegra, we approach the following drivers to drive for the team ONLY if we purchased a second car this turn. We prefer they drive for a full season, but we will accept partial schedules:

Aurelio Amaya
Rafael Molina
