June 1st 1956, French Grand Prix prequalifying

The Monaco Grand Prix was full of ups and downs, with Jack Brabham having the pace, but failing to finish, Peter Collins leading most of the way, and then finally Desmond Titterington coming through with some ten laps remaining to score his first Grand Prix victory.

Now, after a *ahem* three-week break, the teams have made their way to Northern France, Normandy to be precise, for the French Grand Prix at Rouen-les-Essarts. 39 drivers have signed up to this event, where 26 of them will take the start.

-In a bid to give Stuart Lewis-Evans added experience, Irish Racing Cars have agreed to a deal with Coventry Climax to run the young Brit in a third Lancia for this race in order to give him a shot in competitive machinery.
-Following Phil Hill's eventful race in Monaco, he was forced to miss this race, prompting Ferrari to sign Umberto Maglioli as reserve driver and therefore as fifth driver for this race.
-Also on Ferrari's agenda, their deal with Reatherson allowed them to request the Irish team to give Giulio Cabianca his début in this event in place of regular driver Cesare Perdisa.
-Theo Fitzau's M.S.G. Köthen team was originally only going to compete in the German rounds, but an eagerness to get started prompted Theo to transport his O.S.C.A. package to Rouen as a trial run of sorts.
-After administrative issues prevented the team from competing in Monaco, the Catalan Castelldefels team will be making their début in Rouen with Luigi Musso and Alfonso de Portago.
-The fact that he is now 50 years old will not prevent Louis Rosier from racing, and having managed to scrape together enough funds, he's back in Formula One proper with an old Gordini loaned straight from the factory.
-Administrative errors also prevented Roy Salvadori from joining team boss David Hampshire in Monaco, but these issues have been resolved, and both Vanwalls will be appearing in France.
-Another French privateer appearing is Ecurie Voeckler, whose liquidation last year didn't prevent the Voeckler family from setting up shop once more, hiring a brand new Gordini and employing André Simon for a drive.

Unfortunately, there must be a prequalifying session. With 39 entrants and 26 grid spots, 13 drivers will compete in prequalifying. As usual, the top eight will make it to the main session.

No real surprises here. Hamilton and Fangio should be skipping prequalifying for the next few races at least, so the competition should be much fiercer from this point on.

June 3rd 1956, French Grand Prix

Peter Collins got the best start at the front and led the first lap ahead of Brabham, Manzon, Whitehead, Castellotti and Brooks. The first few places changed constantly at the start, though Peter Collins kept the lead. The first retirement happened on lap 4, as Umberto Maglioli span out trying to defend from Tony Bettenhausen. Desmond Titterington was almost caught up in the accident as well, but avoided the chaos. On lap 11, Robert Manzon was knocked out in a similar incident against Peter Whitehead for fourth place. This left 24 cars in the race, an unusually low rate of attrition.

At this point, Brabham was well established in second place, but he was having to defend really hard from his young teammate Eugenio Castellotti. On lap 16, Gerino Gerini span out at Six-Frères out of sheer lack of experience. On the very next lap, Duncan Hamilton clipped the back of Tony Brooks' car and span into the earth bank at the exit of the first corner, reducing the field to 22 drivers. On lap 19, Collins' lead finally fell when Jack Brabham pulled off a stunning move on the outside at Grésil. He attempted to take the lead back, but on lap 21, possibly trying too hard, he left the track at Paradis and hit the earth bank, ending his race. What happened a few seconds later is best described by witnesses.

I saw van der Lof making some unusual twitches with his steering. The speaker had just told us that he'd had an accident, so I thought he was checking his steering for damage.

As he reached the paddock area, I saw a piece of debris fly away, and van der Lof's car suddenly dropped away. He started coming towards us. I ran away as fast as I could.

There was a loud bang, then a blinding flash as the car caught fire.

The Lotus was just rolling along the earth bank right in front of us. We took cover, but debris was flying everywhere.

I thought "This is it!", you know, "My life is over!"

When the noise stopped, I looked around, and people were lying down on the ground everywhere. It was horrible.

There were injured people crying out, there were people looking for people who were dead. And the car was still burning on the track.

Hell. It was hell.

Ambulances and emergency services were called for the spectators and Dries van der Lof. Tragically, by the time the fire was put out, Dries van der Lof had died from his burns.

But this is the fifties, and the race continued. Brabham now led from Whitehead, Castellotti, Bira, Sanesi and Godia. On lap 27, Maurice Trintignant span out defending from Marimón, though most suspected he deliberately stopped in the escape road, robbed of his motivation at the sight of his dead friend. André Simon did the same shortly thereafter, presumably also shaken by the accident. On lap 30, Eugenio Castellotti passed Peter Whitehead for second place. By this point, the fight was out of most drivers. On lap 35, Tony Brooks pulled into the pits with a look of disgust on his face and an "unidentified mechanical failure". He was followed by Giulio Cabianca soon thereafter, then one lap later by Paco Godia, who span off at Grésil, then one further lap later by Desmond Titterington, who pulled into the pits with a smoking engine.

With four laps to go, Sanesi caught and passed Peter Whitehead to complete a Gordini 1-2-3 behind Brabham and Castellotti. After that, positions remained stationary until the end of the race. Jack Brabham took a joyless race victory (coupled with fastest lap), followed by teammates Eugenio Castellotti and Consalvo Sanesi.

Some Italian newspaper wrote:FIAT withdraw from Formula One
After the death of F1 Dutch star Dries van der Lof from burns suffered in a accident at this year's French Grand Prix, FIAT has decided to pull out support from Hernandez, and withdraw from Formula One.

A spokesman person said "Its absolutely sad that this happened". "However, due to the many deaths and very fatal accidents happening over the last few years in F1 if not motorsport in general, we decided to withdraw." "Its completely ludicrous that people have to die in a sport so often". "The dangers of the sport are just not worth it".

All the assets from FIAT's F1 operation were reportedly sold to Escuderia Hernandez, incluiding their base at Turin, Italy.

Halford Auto Racing Team enters Formula One

Highly promising British racing driver Bruce Halford has, at the age of just 26, established his own team to enter the Formula One World Championship.

In order to do so, the team has shelled out for a trio of Loonmotor engines (at £9,500 apiece I believe) and three B.C.M.A. chassis (I have no idea how much these cost).

We will only be running one car for the majority of the season, and expect this to be driven at all times by Bruce Halford, although Colin Chapman has also expressed an interest in driving a second car for the Irish, Scottish and British Grands Prix.

We look forward to an... adequate first season of Formula One racing.

Piero Taruffi wrote:On behalf of the whole O.S.C.A. team, I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Dries van der Lof, his friends, and the Lotus Formula 1 team. I mainly knew Dries van der Lof as a competitor in Formula 1, and while we were not often in evenly matched cars, I enjoyed driving against him, and will remember him as a very talented driver, and a fair competitor. We will all miss him in the Formula 1 paddock.

The entire O.S.C.A. team also send their condolences to the relatives of the spectators who lost their lives in the accident, and we wish those who were injured a fast recovery.

But condolences are not enough. Motorsport has to react to this new tragedy, or it will happen again. After the Le Mans disaster last year, and now this horrible accident, motorsport has to address the problem of spectator safety immediately. And we also need to have a look at how we can reduce the risk for drivers. With Ascari and van der Lof, we have lost two great drivers within less than a year.

We drivers know we're taking risks when we climb into the cars, even if we're not constantly aware of them. If we were, we couldn't drive as fast as we do. I don't think it is possible to eliminate this danger from motorsport without fundamentally changing its nature. However, that doesn't mean we should not take reasonable steps to make racing safer.

The most important step that needs to be taken is to prevent further spectator injuries and deaths. To increase safety for spectators, I propose to keep spectators away from likely trajectories of high-speed accidents, as well as creating physical barriers between the spectator areas and the racetrack, in order to prevent any car from directly crashing into the crowd. The risk of flying debris unfortunately cannot be fully eliminated, but greatly reduced by keeping crowds away from the tracetory of the accident.

I think it's time to move racing to purpose-built facilities, to increase safety for both spectators and drivers. I don't remember my accident at Bremgarten in full detail, but I remember how I lost control over the car and was heading for that group of trees at well over a hundred miles per hour. If this accident had happened at Silverstone, it would still have been scary, but unlikely to result in the massive injuries that ended my racing career. And I'm by far not the only one whose career was cut short by avoidable risks. John Fitch's career, for example, was ended by a telegraph pole at Sebring. And John and I can consider ourselves lucky, having survived our accidents.

We're going to Spa-Francorchaps next, and that circuit is a disaster waiting to happen. Barbed wire fences, forest areas with no barriers between the trees and the track, telegraph poles, houses, cliffs... that circuit is nothing but a fourteen kilometer long death trap.

After Le Mans and Rouen, motorsport has to change. We can not race the cars of 1956 on circuits that seem more suitable for those of 1926.

We also wish all those who have been maimed the speediest of recoveries.

As both a team owner and a racer myself, I understand the risks of racing these cars, and that is an element that can never been completely taken away from the sport. With that being said however, to see the lives of Dries and so many other people cut short so violently and tragedy puts everything into perspective, which is why we as a team will not be making the trip to Spa Francorchamps for the next race. It will take time for us as a team to recover from this terrible event, and we need to do this the right way by everyone involved.

Right, a couple of issues here. Firstly, Loonmotor's owner is currently AWOL, so I'm not sure you will succeed in obtaining one of their fine designs. Secondly, Colin Chapman is a little busy running the Lotus team, so I'm not sure if your attempts to entice him with a second car will be successful.

However, I would like to extend an offer to use Irish Racing Cars' spare Lancia D50 package. It's proven machinery, having won the Monaco Grand Prix in the capable hands of Desmond Titterington. It's worth £5,000 per race, and with it you will get a free Coventry Climax engine. As it stands the chassis is currently unavailable for the East German and Irish rounds, as it is already booked for those events. That said, it is available for all other remaining rounds this season.

You will also have the option to keep the car at the end of the season for a negotiable sum, should you choose to do so.

Since you are a British customer, Vanwall is willing to offer exclusive deals for you. Our brand-new VW56 chassis together with the well-proven 254 engine will only cost you £43 000. The older VW55 model is £6 000 cheaper. You can also buy an used VW55-254 combination for a mere £22 000, or lease it for £2 200 a race.

That deal sounds too good to refuse.

May I purchase one VW56-254 vehicle and two VW55-254 vehicles, which comes to a total of £87,000. Such a deal is simply too good to refuse. This means:
> One 56-254 for Bruce Halford to drive
> One 55-254 as a spare car
> One 55-254 for stray drivers to take

We immediately cease negotiations with the likes of Loonmotor, and hope to be a loyal Vanwall customer team for some years to come.

The Irish Times wrote:Byrne hits out at OSCA manager's comments

Cathal Byrne, team manager of the IRC Grand Prix motor racing team, has voiced his public disagreement with comments made by OSCA manager Piero Taruffi, who is calling for auto racing to be moved away from closed public road circuits in the interests of driver and spectator safety. This coming in the wake of the tragic demise of Dutchman Andre 'Dries' van der Lof and a number of spectators in the French Grand Prix at Rouen.

"I think it's a ludicrous move to propose", he said. "It goes completely against the tradition of motor racing. These cars are built for the road, so they should race on the road. While I agree with the sentiment that steps should be made in the direction of improved spectator safety, as there is absolutely no reason to put them at risk, there is equally no reason to adopt the same approach for drivers. These men accept the dangers of motor racing, van der Lof is no exception, my condolences to him and his grieving family by the way. If they did not accept the reality of the sport's dangers they would not be racing. Simple."

"I find it bizarre that a former driver of Mr. Taruffi's standing would be coming out with this nonsense. Making the racing less dangerous for the drivers will take away the gladiatorial element that has made it so great. Here in Ireland we have long had a road racing tradition: Skerries, Tallaght, Dundrod, the Curragh, Phoenix Park and now the Grand Prix in Wicklow. I consider myself lucky to have raced at some of these venues in my youth. Even abroad the great races are the ones held on the roads, the natural environment of the motor car. Look at Le Mans, the Targa Florio or the Mille Miglia. These races have been popular for decades and I expect them to remain so for many years to come."

Currently, seven of the ten rounds of the World Championship for Drivers are scheduled to be held on closed road circuits, including the IV Irish International Grand Prix on the Wicklow Circuit in September, the first race to bear the title in 25 years. But questions are already being raised in the wake of the van der Lof tragedy. Even the future of the car and motorcycle races in Wicklow is in doubt. Last year British driver Donald Beauman was killed at Wicklow when his Connaught Formula 2 struck a tree and he was thrown from the car, which set itself and the tree ablaze, resulting in an outcry against the races led by the local parish priest.
