The "Only Great Circuits" Alternative Championship

Post by Benetton »

I've been itching to do an alternative championship were I'll remove all the bad circuits from the calendar, raising the value of the GP's remaining and driver skill involved. The results could be really different, especially in close seasons!

However, before I can begin. I would like you to make your list of which circuits that should be kept and which should be dropped. I will then make the alternative seasons based on your choices. Once a circuit gets accepted by the F1 Rejects community it can no longer be voted upon. However, you can continue to vote yes or no to tracks that are still avalaible for selection. I'll post separate lists containing each. How long a track can be voted on depends when I'm doing the results for a season involving the track, for example Monza's fate will be sealed in 1950, whereas Yas Marina won't get a yes or a no until I've reached the 2009 season. So keep on voting!

Thanks for inviting us to take part in this alternate championship. Here's my vote on the tracks, sticking to your colour scheme for the ins and outs. I must say though, that I would like to remove some edited versions of circuits from the process such as the 90s version of Kyalami, the Tilkefied Hockenheim, the Hungaroring before it was edited in the 00s when it finally became good - or the post 1994 Imola, which F1 should never have returned to much much earlier. Concerning 1994, I'd also like you to remove all tracks that have included a tyre chicane in that year.

I just wanna say that I don't understand why you want to drop Montjuïc. Yes, it was unsafe, but so were most circuits of that era. And it was very good for a street circuit.
Go home, Bernie Ecclestone!

Thank you for your participation. I'll keep this thread open a few days with hope of more contributors, although you can already clearly see a pattern of the popular and not so popular tracks. I've made an Excel sheet keeping a score, if a track gets a majority or tie "keep" vote than it's kept in the series.

Oh and if you want to be more layout specific like Yannick, than please be. His vote has resulted that for the time being Paul Ricard will be kept in its 1971-85 layout but dropped 86-90 ;)

Can we add Bathurst for the Australian GP, or are we only allowed circuits which have staged F1 in real life?

Unfortunately not since we are just basically deleting real results from real life and see who would have been champion if only certain rounds would have been contested in a championship.

Oh right - I only skim-read the thread and thought you were going to be running a championship from scratch, not using previous results. Apologies.

Here are the results from the first years. I'm sorry if some of the shared drives are wrong, they are really confusing. I tried my best.

Farina loses his championship in 1950 to Fangio. Fangio and Ascari completely dominate the first six seasons, winning three titles each.

Oddly enough in 1956 there are no reject circuits. So the results are exactly the same (when you delete Indy 500) as in real life. So the championhip went to Fangio, with Moss 2nd and Collins 3rd.

Not one championship changes hands from the years 1957-1966 in this alternative championship. Even the 1964 championship had the same ending, since all championship contenders retired at the rubbish Zeltweg Airfield circuit! Here are the results. But don't worry, I got a feeling this could get really interesting post 1975, when many rubbish circuits where introduced..

And in 1966 there were no reject circuits on the calendar, just like ten years earlier, so the real-life results remains. Top 3 were Brabham, Surtees and Rindt.

The 1967 season was one of the closest seasons yet contested. Before the final race in Mexico City the standing was Hulme 35 and Clark 32. Clark won the race in superior fashion and deservably took his third championship. Hulme never regained his 1967 standard and retired championshipless.

In 1968 it was a similar story to that of 1967. Although this time around the actors were new boy Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill. The standing before the last round was Stewart 36, Hill 30. The championship was once again decided in Mexico and many predicted Sir Jackie would walk away with it. But that wasn't going to be, Jackie did a "Hamilton" and finished 7th while Hill drove off to victory and his 2nd championship.

Can't stand those Excel sheets. Found a faster way to do this.

1973 - Jackie Stewart had the championship clinched even before the final race. He scored 4 wins in the 11 rounds contested.

1. Jackie Stewart .. 58 pts (4 Wins - 7 Podiums)
2. Ronnie Peterson .. 46 pts (4 Wins - 6 Podiums)
3. Emerson Fittipaldi .. 36 pts (2 Wins - 5 Podiums)

1974 - Clay Regazzoni steals this one. It was wide open at the final race in Watkins Glen, but all of the championship contenders failed to score. Niki Lauda only managed 6th in the championship, despite scoring 8 pole positions!!

1. Clay Regazzoni .. 37 pts (1 Win - 5 Podiums)
2. Carlos Reutemann .. 32 pts (3 Wins - 4 Podiums)
3. Ronnie Peterson .. 31 pts (3 Wins - 3 Podiums)

1975 - Watkins Glen, Season Finale, Lauda vs. Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi had 39 pts against Laudas 37.5 before the race. Lauda managed to score a pole though and went on to win the race, with Fittipaldi second. Lauda takes his first title.

1. Niki Lauda .. 46.5 pts (3 wins - 6 podiums)
2. Emerson Fittipaldi .. 45 pts (2 wins - 6 podiums)
3. James Hunt .. 33 pts (1 win - 4 podiums)

1976 - Lauda was walking away with the title until his crash in Germany. Hunt resurrected himself while Lauda was absent and was just 4 points shy of Niki when the last round came along. Well, at Fuji it started raining and Lauda didn't want to risk his life. Maybe feeling confident that Hunt couldn't get a podium that he needed. But Hunt did it! And amazingly Hunt and Lauda were on equal points, with equal wins, 2nd, 3rds and 4th. Rest of their results were DNF's or DSQ's. Hunt took the title because he scored more pole positions!

1. James Hunt .. 49 pts (4 wins - 6 Podiums)
2. Niki Lauda .. 49 pts (4 wins - 6 Podiums)
3. Jody Scheckter .. 34 pts (4 Podiums)

1977 - Well, Lauda came back and dominated. Period.

1. Niki Lauda .. 66 pts (3 wins - 9 Podiums)
2. Jody Scheckter .. 42 pts (2 Wins - 7 Podiums)
3. James Hunt .. 40 pts (3 Wins - 5 Podiums)

Where did Emerson Fittipaldi wind up?

He was a tied 4th with Lauda on 30 pts. He lost his results from Spain (3rd), Belgium (1st), Sweden (4th) and Canada (1st).. So together that is 25 lost. He almost took half his points from rubbish circuits :D

1978 (13 rounds) - Before the final race in Montreal the table was: Andretti 46, Reutemann 40. And while Andretti just finished 10th poor Carlos couldn't manage more than a 3rd. Close but no cigar.

1. Mario Andretti .. 46 pts (4 Wins - 5 Podiums)
2. Carlos Reutemann .. 44 pts (4 Wins - 6 Podiums)
3. Ronnie Peterson .. 35 pts (2 Wins - 4 Podiums)

1979 (13 rounds) - The season proved to be really exciting. At the final race it was a three way title bout. The standings before USA was Scheckter 45, Villeneuve 44 and Jones 44. Jones scored the pole position, but that didn't help since both he and Scheckter retired, while Villeneuve cruised to a championship.

1. Gilles Villeneuve .. 53 pts (3 wins - 7 podiums)
2. Jody Scheckter .. 45 (48) pts (2 wins - 5 podiums)
3. Alan Jones .. 44 pts (4 wins - 6 podiums)

1980 (13 rounds) - Alan Jones got his revenge this season, although Piquet still had a chance at the final round.

1. Alan Jones .. 65 pts (5 wins - 9 podiums)
2. Nelson Piquet .. 52 (54) pts (3 wins - 6 podiums)
3. Carlos Reutemann .. 44 (45) pts (1 win - 7 podiums)

This is getting interesting. Please give us a list of circuits that will be eliminated from the results from now on because they have been voted out. Thanks.

What has become of this championship? Has the voting ended? I guess so, since there haven't been any more votes coming in during the last few days.

So please, bring on the championship. Thanks.
