Geely F1?

Post by Dan B »

So browsing online I stumbled on this thing, purporting to be Geely's vision (I don't want to say attempt because as far as I know they didn't try to enter, I don't think) of an F1 car.

Then again, what I said it being a (quasi) F1 car might be wrong. Does anyone have any info on this monstrosity?

Do you know in which year was it designed? It really looks cumbersome, bulky and heavy, and hence slow as well. The driver might have well been Ho-Pin Tung  It would have failed to pass FIA's crash tests, that's for sure  And what about the engine?

Well, if F1's war on power is anything to go by, by the time Geely gets this out the door, all the teams will be using pull-start lawnmower engines.
Some say he plans to put an S921 on the Goodwood 2012 run, and that he DOES know what Deletraz is doing.
All we know is...he's called Perry McCarthy!

...we'll never see an S921 at Goodwood, will we?

Love how they tried to scrub the "Avon" markings off the tires. (You can still see it on the inside right front)

When I first saw this posted here, I assumed it was an old chassis bought off another team then repainted but the front suspension does look rather primative compared to 21st century F1 cars.

I just want to alert everyone to the fact, as of this writing, this topic is the first result on Google for 'Geely F1'.

Gosh, if Geely had dared to compete with it, it would have been the most rejectful thing ever, maybe even more than Life

It looks more like a cross between a Formula 1 car and an Indy car (the back end, with the strange aero flick ups, looks a bit like a circa 2008 F1 car, but the front end looks more like a 1990's Champ Car, with the wide nose section and sidepod openings). And the fastest that car has ever gone would be whatever speed the lorry that took it to the show did.

A 1990's Champ Car? O_o

Doesn't look like a 1990's Champ Car at all, the nose doesn't slope all the way to the ground. Looks more like a GP2 car with MacGyvered suspension if you ask me. Something makes me want to say the car is from 1999, but there is no way in hell that resembles a Champ Car.

Are you suggesting it's a Jaguar F1, or more likely, a Stewart?

No. The Stewart's front suspension was more sophisticated! F1 suspension has been more sophisticated for decades!

It's called Formula Geely, and might just be the most rejectful series on the planet.
It's purpose: to develop Chinese racing drivers.

This isn't the first time such a thing has popped up.

130hp. Don't think that it could quite be classified as an F1 car...

Give it a little time until someone actually comes out of the woodwork.

THEN things will get Reject-y.

That livery looks like a rip-off from a Toyota, altough the upper edge on the nose-cone is simliar to BMW's.

EDIT: http://jalopnik.com/381461/geely-to-mak ... ari-f1-car

Geely also attempted to rip-off a Ferrari F1, FYI. :?

That 'Ferrari F1' ripoff is called the Geely GF. It's actually the prototype of the car seen above. The ferrariesque livery was to get people's attention.

Not surprising considering it's as aerodynamic as a parachute and produces at best 220HP. According to an internet source I found its top speed is a rather pitiable 130MPH on the 1KM long straight at Bejing. Considering '130MPH' is round enough and was put forward by a guy who was hired to test and promote the car it's probably exaggerated too.

To put that in to perspective that's the same power output as a Formula 3 car, which can get up to 155MPH.

I think that my 112 hp 1.6l turbodiesel Mini Clubman (estate/stationwagen) is capable of not much less (max speed approx 122 mph...).
