National minorities in F1
National minorities in F1
Hello,
inspired by f1-gast's list of Dutch drivers I decided to start the thread with national minorities in F1.
I mean, I will make a list of all the countries who:

Well, I didn't mention that one because it wasn't an official test (Walter Wolf was invited for the opening of Poznan Circuit, by the prime minister, Andrzej's father, and he brought the car with him to give prime minister's son a ride). But so be it
Re: National minorities in F1
Not sure if he actually tested or not but at least he was signed as a test driver:

Ho-Pin Tung should be added.

Re: National minorities in F1
Apparently Csaba Kesjár was destined to be something big in the future...he was Michael Schumacher-dominant in every series he entered, but he was killed in 1988 on the Norisring round of the German F3, where he was doing promisingly well. Apparently that same day he didn't have any desire to race and was even forced to step on the car...

Thomas Danielsson, Bjorn Wirdheim and Alx Danielsson all spring to mind as test drivers.

What about the great Gunnar Nilsson?
Re: National minorities in F1
Ireland
Drivers: Ralph Firman (Jordan 2003)
Test drivers: Derek Daly (Williams 1993), Adam Carroll (Honda 2006)
We've had more race drivers than that.
Drivers:
Joe Kelly (Private entries in 1950 and 51 - there's one to research for the site)
Derek Daly (1978-1982 with, Hesketh, Ensign,Tyrell, March, Theodore and Williams)
David Kennedy (Shadow, 1980)
Tommy Byrne (Theodore, 1982)
Ralph Firman (Jordan 2003)
Not sure about testers other than Carroll, but I should point out that Carroll's from the North. He's listed as "Irish" on Wiki purely because he represented Ireland at A1GP - I actually don't know whether his racing licence is British or Irish. His own website lists him as 'Northern Irish' too bad the FIA don't recognise that as a nationality Adam. If he gets onto an IndyCar podium, we'll see what flag they hoist.

He was Irish, was he? 'Cos I've seen him in results and his name seemed so hilariously plain. I genuinely know 3 Joe Kellys.
Better than 'Tour in a suit case' Takagi.
Re: National minorities in F1
Oh dear, maybe I should have left the limitation to the 1980s-2010s?
Don't you think that it's not a minority any more?
I thought of two, three racer drivers and some test drivers. Now it appears that both Sweden and Ireland had lots of drivers in F1
Henceforth, we're limiting the number of F1 full-time drivers to 10.

Apparently. Born in Dublin according to Wiki, and in South America to Irish parents according to Autosport. Then lived in England for a while before moving to Dublin he established a collection of rare cars.

5 is a lot?
They're all rejects apart from Daly, btw.

Luxemburg
gachot was born in luxemburg, and was luxemburgian basically until his career started. As he races under both french and belgian license, it's better to say he was luxemburgian.

Re: National minorities in F1

how many rhodesians where there actually?
nothing better for statistics than a country that doesn't exist anymore (although i would like some drivers from zimbabwe )

Louis Chiron was also Monegasque.

I was going to include another british colony since rhodesia is mentioned
I though there was only about 6 australian f1 drivers, I'm surprised there seems to have been more like 16!
But I learnt something today at least, this guy sounds awesome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Gaze

I watched Adam Carroll win the A1 GP title at Brands in the only year Team GB did not come third in the championship - and was glad someone from the UK won...
And when I first saw the list I assumed Ireland was going to include both the Republic and the Northern parts and wondered where Irvine was, but realised later that in context, only the Republic was intended...

Been at least 3 full drivers from Northern Ireland - Irvine, Watson and Donnelly. All reg'd as British by the FIA.

Re: National minorities in F1
I don't think Martin Kudzak ever tested an F1-car. He did however have his picture taken while sitting in a Jaguar show car. In any case, he was 15 at the time, so a proper test, or even a straighlinetest would have been highly unlikely.
