Create Your Own Team!

Post by Jeroen Krautmeir »

I really wasn't sure where to put this, but here goes! All you need to do is choose your team name, engine, designer, drivers, test drivers and other extras if you want! There are no limitations to what your choices are (so feel free to put Nino Farina or anyone from the old days or anyone from another competition)! The below is my crazy team;

BRT Grand Prix

Chief Designer: John Barnard/Loic Bigois
Engine: Mugen-Honda V10
Driver 1: Nicolas Lapierre
Driver 2: Alex Brundle (mark my words, he'll do what Martin couldn't) :D
Test Driver(s): HWNSNBM and Christian Klien

Technically, it's the first effort - Alex Shnaider was born in St. Petersburg, but he was a Canadian national and spent most of his life there. In fact, the Midland Group is registered in and based out of Canada. There was nothing Russian about it.

You're actually quite wrong. The team was registered in Russia, therefore making it a Russian Formula One team.

I know that. My point is that aside from the registration, there was nothing Russian about the team except for Shnaider's connection to the country. The team was not based in Russia, none of the key personnel were Russian and did not run a Russian driver. The only Russian person of any note within the team was Roman Rusinov, who was only a test driver - he never raced and he never even got to have a go on Fridays. He largely felt like he was there to give the team's claim to its Russian heritage some merit.

The team was Russian in name only. My best friend is Russian (sort of ... she was born in Moscow, and moved to Chisinau before the fall of communism and so is technically Moldovan, but she is Russian on one side of her family) and says that if Russia at large had known about Midland and the way it claimed to be Russian without actually being Russian, actual Russians wouldn't have taken kindly to it.

Red Bull Racing is run entirely out of Milton Keynes but uses an Austrian racing license.

While your point about the team's actual location is perfectly valid, officially Midland was the first ever Russian F1 team, so it's not really disputable....

midland is not the first attempt, but the first one to actually race, because in the sixties, the great russian car manufacturer moskvitch have built a formula1 car!

(also interesting, the czechoslowakian tatra has also built an F1, must be in the 50's i think, which raced some non-championship events, don't know if they actually raced non-championship F1 or F2 races, can't remember)

Over on 8w, they have an interesting article on the Sokol, which was the first attemply by the USSR to create a racing car. It was based on the last Auto Union car (the Type E), and was bankrolled by Vasily Stalin (Stalin's son, who was, at the time, also commander of a Russian air division). Vasily was obsessed with fast cars and aircraft, and wanted to show that the Soviet technicians (including quite a few ex-Auto Union engineers behind the Iron Curtain) were capable of competing with the Western powers in all areas of technology.
However, the cars proved to be quite difficult to drive (being based on the Auto Union cars, which were, despite being quite sphisticated in many respects, pretty poor in terms of handling and suspension developments), as well as being difficult to maintain, and after the fall of Stalin, Vasily was forced into exile, and the cars were abandoned in East Germany (one survived, and is now over at Donington Motor Museum, whilst the second, given to a local university for design studies, is thought to have basically fallen to bits, and be little more than scrap metal by now).

Just from the reject standpoint

Chief designer: Eric Broadley (he designed Lola T97/30)
Driver, car number 46: Valentino Rossi
Driver, car number 47*: Olivier Tielemans (Chanoch Nissany beat him twice in three qualifying sessions in International F3000)
Reserve driver: Luca Badoer
Test drivers: Safety car driver at Pau WTCC race in 2009, Mohammed bin Sulayem
Engines: SIsu truck engines (not saying that they would be bad, but as a Finn I wanted something Finnish in the team)

* We were forced to have cars with two successive numbers and Rossi needed his own racing number.

most of my information comes from here http://www.autosoviet.altervista.org/main-english.htm but i can't remember everything, i haven't read the website in a long time, probably the thing you mentioned is mentioned here too.
they have a page specifically about 'eastern racing cars'
the rest is all about regular east-european cars and bikes, interesting stuff from a rejects point of view 8-)

Engine Supplier: Renault

Driver 2 - Nigel Mansell (!!!!)
Team Principal - Me!
Chief Designer - Adrian Newey
Reserve Driver - Luca Badoer
Test Drivers - Tarso Marques, Norberto Fontana and the Fire King
Team Livery - Black!

The idea would be to bankroll an incredibly expensive, unreliable, yet on its day world-beating team.

My mother has spent more of her life in America than in Germany. Three of her four kids live in the States and the fourth is in the US Navy. Does that make her not German anymore? No? Same thing applies here. You can call yourself something and live somewhere else.
