Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2012 Bahrain

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Charles Pic's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Might as well start this off then - I think that Di Resta's drive to 6th place takes this, as it puts him one place closer to unrefectification, plus he managed to make a two stop strategy work at a venue where everybody else was struggling badly for tyre wear.
Kimi and Grosjean probably take a joint 2nd for me - Grosjean for unrejectification and a solid podium, whilst Kimi's drive from 11th to 2nd was pretty impressive too.

mario, I'll count the second nomination as Lotus then, if that's okay.

1. Paul di Resta
He's proving himself beautifully, and now that he's had two sixth places, one more and he's not a reject. With some luck, he could have nailed Rosberg AND unrejectification. Still, well done, Hülkenberg was nowhere in sight.

2. Lotus-Renault
Amazing pace, and a double podium, with Kimi taking 2nd from 11th. Superb drive, but not perfect from the team. Still, not really expected this.

1. Kimi Räikkönen - stunning drive. Stunning. Just stunning. Smashed GGGRRRSSSJJJNNN and almost beat Seb.
2. Sebastian Vettel - You don't just keep Kimi at bay and get away with it. Especially considering Lotus had the better cars today. Also tore his teammate to pieces.
Sticking his neck on the line, one post at a time. Oh, and Singapore is still better than Monaco.

1. Romain Grosjean - a truly Pérez-esque unrejectification
2. Sebastian Vettel - A good drive in a car that's far from the class of the field

1. Grosjean - Unrejectification and podium. Well done.
2. Di Resta - Made two stopper work, now very close to unrejectification. Needs to keep it up though.

1. Grojean - Unrejectifies himelf, while getting a podium, and leading a lap in the process.

2. Di Resta - Coming close to unrejectification as well. (Probably will if Rosberg gets a penalty.) Lead a lap as well.

1. Lotus (the team as a whole)
2. Paul Di Resta. He might yet get unrejectified if anything happens to Rosberg in the post-race investigations.

Raikkonen was also impressive, but because of his successful past, it should have been expected and have a bit more casual judgement about it.

Difficult to say. Paul di Resta was mighty, but ultimately I have to concede it to Lotus. Both their drivers were dynamite today, and I was wholeheartedly rooting for Räikkönen to win the race.

1) Romain Grosjean: I was not expecting a third at all. Great racecraft, and probably the best start I have seen in eons.
2) Paul di Resta: Excellent driving out there. Only person that made the 2 stop strategy work.

Honorable Mention:
- Kimi Raikkonen To be honest I think this is on par of his level right now. I do think he needs to qualify better but today's result I think is rather expected of him. That said, it was a great drive.

2. di Resta - sixth even after missing FP2 due to brave stance by the team.

2. Romain Grosjean

Hat off to Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vengar (I'm guessing a german would spell finger something like this).

Rosberg also pulled of an IIDOTR but for all the very wrong reasons. Definetly didn't expect that.

1. Paul di Resta - Mighty drive. One of the best single performances so far this season. Managed his tyres extremely well while maintaining a very solid pace.

2. Renault (The Enstone Team) - Fantastic performance by both of their drivers. They are looking really strong at the moment and I think Kimi has a chance to be on the podium again in Barcelona.

1) Lotus - I honestly didn't think they had the pace but that was a great job all round.
2) Di Resta - Considering the team's situation, that result must have cheered everyone up. To not be gobbled up at the end was very impressive.

This is hard, I want to vote for Raikkonen, Grosjean and di Resta, I feel their results are all worthy of nominations. I think ultimately however, we all know Raikkonen is quick in the Lotus, so my two votes will go:

My nominations...

1. Lotus GP - the surprise of the weekend. Great race performance, a podium for both drivers and unrejectification for Grrrjnnn. I think someone's going "Bahahahahar" there now...

2. Paul di Resta - great drive. Even briefly led the race, and landed a solid 6th.

Honorable mention:
Felipe Massa - Seems to be picking up his pace. Even though he didn't go well in qualifying, he matched Alonso's pace in the race.

I'm not going to go for Kimi, as he did only finish, what, 7 seconds ahead of Grosjean in the same car whilst having fresher tyres thoughout at least 3/4 of the race. I think Grosjean deserves credit
for finishing that close and pulling off some good moves at the start, and on Webber and Hamilton, but he's only going to be 2nd for me.

I'm going for :

1. Di Resta
2. Grosjean

Di Resta went for a bold strategy which only Kamui also tried (and failed with), and once again wiped the floor with the Hulk, who is becoming Mr. Anonymous (not the hackers) this season so far.
If it was a surprise that he qualified in the top 10, surely it should be even more unexpected for him to finish 6th and be the only person to make that particular strategy work, so he gets my vote.

1) Romain Grosjean: While Raikkonen was up front trying for glory, Grosjean put in a quiet, but certainly not understated performance to unrejectify himself and make up for some of his risible errors earlier in the season.

2) Paul di Resta: Made the most of the contrary strategy to move himself closer to unrejectification, and held off Alonso beautifully on the last lap to keep the sixth place.

Honourable Mention - Kimi Raikkonen: Outstanding performance from Raikkonen, battling Vettel for several laps and keeping up the pace to demonstrate his performance after the unfortunate circumstances in China.
