Reject Sports Names

Post by Alextrax52 »

As some of you will know from the Winter Olympics there was a German Ski Jumper called Andreas Wank in the competitions. It's pretty much the only reason why my dad likes the Ski Jumping. Enoch came out with some reject names of his own.

Has anyone else ever heard of a reject sounding Sports name?

There was an ice hockey player called Miroslav Šatan. However, the one time I saw him in a televised game (late 90s, I'd been out for a night on the sauce and was going to watch anything that was on the TV) imagine what I saw when the American broadcaster had no concept of the hacek or other diacritics.

At the Sochi Winter Olympics, it wasn't just Andreas Wank making headlines:

In Spanish, a is "ah," r is "a-ray," c is "say," and e is "a." Altogether, the pronunciation should be "are-say." Similar to the British word. That's quite rejectful!

Prost is used to mean "cheers" (as in giving a toast) in German-speaking countries. And Panis in Latin means bread. So no, not obvious at all! :P ;)

As a Sabres fan, I use to adore Miro. He, Hasek, and Warrener carried those early 200s teams. I always used to hear it pronounced as "Sha-taun". Was that not correct?

That's how I remember it from the commentators, though I'm referring more to what appeared on screen...

All this talk of Satan had me go through my saved stack of hockey magazines which I collected in my youth.
I knew there was an article of him somewhere, and I found it in the October 1999 issue:

Image

I didn't read it all again, but I saw him mentioning that when he first started out playing in the States,
he received a few letters from people wanting him to change his name.

There was a New Zealand cricket bowler of the 1960's and 1970's named Bob Cunis. After a less than memorable performance, a commentator said that his bowling was like his surname - neither one or the other!

As for amusing cricket names, surely Quinton de Kock deserves a mention
